OTOH, the triumph of gay rights in the US, while certainly an advancement in civil rights, is a poor substitute for economic rights. Which is part of the point, I think.

Agreed. But we can't get into a civil rights divide vs. an economic divide or we run the risk of missing that the two are joined.

I think the ruling class has effected just that.

Only time they, in any portion, support a popular cause is when it doesn't effect their wallets. If it divides the working class, a bonus.
