With 10 forums you have twice as many threads on top as you do with 5. I think that is of value.

I have all sorts of things I want to post about immigration, labor and agriculture but I hate to bury good discussions by bumping them down. More forums make newcomers more likely to sign up and post, too, I think.

Thinking about the threads getting buried issue, we could have a forum (or several) just for the ones we want to save and move them there. In fact every forum could have two sections - current and archived.

Thoughts?

Mike, were you thinking of very narrow "topical" forums or just more generic sounding forums - something in between. I think its a good idea because it doesn't *seem* like alot gets put up here vs other sites with 100s of topic an hour but when you go to review a few days of posts at once you're like "whoa, there's alot of stuff here!"

I think it would be a good idea either way, it seems like not every poster checks the site everyday and all of the good threads go long where it means they might have sunk by the time someone gets around to reading through it entirely

Something in between maybe - or actually both. General discussion threads are needed, but then it can be valuable to have places where people with specialized knowledge or interests can post as well. I don't like issues forums, though, because the concept of issues is at best merely about tactics and at worst is divisive, irrelevant and distracting. Hey, maybe an issues grave yard forum - people bring their issues in to have them be destroyed and neutralized.

Well it is quality over quantity here. People will be slower to sign up and start posting, but since there is substance and depth they will keep lurking and reading and eventually join and post. People will self-qualify. If there were posts "Falwell dies and hooray because he was really evil" or "did you hear what Stewart just said" or "the chimp is groping women again" or "why Wes Clark should be president" people would be signing up and jumping right in.

I was disappointed there wasn't the inevitable "Was Falwell as repressed homosexual (and therefore evil, even though we say we think gays are equal)" Woulda been a riot. Whats the groping think about - I need my daily dose of dirt..

You see, Bush is just too much of a goofus to be OUR president - "he isn't MY president and I want my country back!!" For upscale liberals with discernment and discriminating taste, "chimps" just won't do - "did you hear what the idiot said today???" The fashion sense of the president's wife is another hot topic - "Pickles is wearing the drapery again. Can you believe it?"

They post pictures of the president hugging women and make remarks that he is groping them, that he doesn't get any from Pickles, etc.

Oh I was thinking Arnold style groping, hell I've been accused of groping my cousin (ok, ignore that, moving on..)

Have you considered doing the forums like Sports Divisions? Like The Eugene Debs Forum or The Che Gueverra Forum? You could better pick the right historical figures than me. The JP Lovecraft Forum (for Luddites and the bizarre).

Maybe its a shitty idea but you can't deny it'd be different :)

EDIT: the Johnny Walker forum

That's an interesting take, kinda along the lines of my idea to move content from the board to topical content on the drupal page.
