What follows is nothing more than the Wikipedia entry on this character which does a better job than I could do. Every single thought and line of the narrative is insane. He was born Dennis but now he's Justin. He is a "libertarian/paleoconservative" who runs Antiwar.com. He is a mess. Raimondo should be the "poster-boy" of politics in America. Anyone this confused and this strident about it, should simply explode. I suspect the first job in restarting politics in the U.S. will be to clean up the debris left behind by assholes like this one.

Justin Raimondo

Justin Raimondo (born Dennis Raimondo on November 18, 1951) is a libertarian/paleoconservative author and the editorial director of the website Antiwar.com.

Background

During the 1960s, Raimondo took a brief interest in the philosophy of Ayn Rand before joining Young Americans for Freedom. In the 1970s, he became active in the Libertarian Party. With Eric Garris, he organized a "Radical Caucus", which brought Raimondo and Garris to the attention of the influential libertarian theorist Murray Rothbard. (The caucus was revived in 2004 as the Rothbard Caucus.) In 1983, after a schism in the party, Raimondo left the Libertarian Party and attempted to organize a libertarian faction in the Republican Party known as the Libertarian Republican Organizing Committee. After 1989, Raimondo again began working with Rothbard in the anti-war John Randolph Club.

Raised a Roman Catholic, Raimondo is "not a believer."

Recent Activities

In the 1996 U.S. congressional elections, Raimondo ran as a Republican candidate in California's 8th district against Nancy Pelosi. While championing conservative and libertarian causes in general, the main emphasis of his campaign was his opposition to the deployment of U.S. troops in the Balkans and, in particular, Pelosi's vote to that effect. Raimondo received 13% of the vote while Pelosi got 85%.

During the 1992, 1996, and 2000 presidential elections, Raimondo supported the campaigns of Pat Buchanan, both as a Republican and in the Reform Party. Being an openly gay man, his support of the social conservative Buchanan attracted considerable attention. In 1995, during the Clinton administration's military interventions into the Bosnian war, Raimondo and Garris launched Antiwar.com to provide a platform for their opposition. The site has continued to publish on a daily basis. Raimondo has been a vocal critic of the invasion of Iraq and the ongoing occupation. In 2004, he supported Ralph Nader for President, and explained his reason for this in an article published in The American Conservative.

Major ideas and recurring themes

Several themes recur regularly in Raimondo's writing, mostly derived from his libertarian ideological roots. He strongly opposes the Israeli occupation of Palestine. He believes that initiatory war is wrong, immoral, and counterproductive, that a small group of neoconservatives in both major American political parties has been responsible for "lying us into war" repeatedly, and that the ideals of the Old Right conservative movement have been consistently sold out since around the time of the Vietnam war, when neoconservatives united with religious conservatives to pursue an expansive foreign policy, often in support of the country of Israel.

Long before John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt argued that Israel exerts a dominant force in the formulation of American foreign policy (see The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy), Raimondo was essentially saying the same thing. Raimondo also believes the United States was led into World War II through lies by FDR and that the US provoked a war with Japan deliberately through economic sanctions. Raimondo's views have been compared by Christopher Hitchens to those of Charles Lindbergh, whom Raimondo describes as an "American hero sprung from the heartland." However, it seems clear that Raimondo does not endorse Lindbergh's Des Moines speech in which the famous aviator decried Jewish influence on the media (see Raimondo's book, Reclaiming the American Right, pages 106, 137, 227). Raimondo has also written repeatedly about the Israeli Art Student conspiracy and he has written that elements of Israeli intelligence operating in the U.S. had advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks.

Writing style

Raimondo's writing style might be characterized as caustic, detail-oriented, and sometimes angry or sarcastic. His typical "Behind the Headlines" column covers foreign policy, and he is not above enjoying the downfall of his adversaries or attacking other Internet pundits, with some of his favorite targets being Christopher Hitchens, William Kristol, Jonah Goldberg, David Frum, and Andrew Sullivan. More often than not, though, his targets of attack are government figures and programs. He was also one of the first Internet pundits to make maximum use of the linkability of the web, filling each article with extensive hyperlinks to source material in support of his arguments.

Bibliography

In addition to to his thrice-weekly column for antiwar.com, he is a regular contributor to The American Conservative and Chronicles magazine. Raimondo also writes two columns a month for Taki's Top Drawer.

He is the the author of several books:

Reclaiming the American Right: The Lost Legacy of the Conservative Movement (Center for Libertarian Studies, 1993)
Into the Bosnian Quagmire: The Case Against U.S. Intervention in the Balkans (AFPAC, 1996)
An Enemy of the State: The Life of Murray N. Rothbard, Prometheus Books, July 2000, ISBN 1-57392-809-7.
The Terror Enigma: 9/11 And the Israeli Connection, iUniverse, November 2003, ISBN 0-595-29682-3.

Part of why I put this guy up was to evoke controversy. There will be people who like this guy, because they like his "stand" on something or they like how "independent" he is or somethin' else. I see nothin' but the most self-indulgent politics imaginable. Who does this guy stand for and who does he stand with? He is sort of the Republican analog of the liberals who drive Mike batty. He is for stuff because he likes it. His "morality" is as selective as his "perspective". And, oh yeah, he is a big supporter of Ron Paul.

Raimondo is also a poster-boy (in reverse) for "class-politics". I could guess his bio in 4 notes. Watta ya wanna bet that he is "from the middle"?

If you want a classic example of that, how 'bout David Duke. He takes a heroic stand and criticizes Israel, y'know..

I'm beginning to really like our asshole gallery. The category is broad enough to accomodate real monsters like Evola or Volker but still leave room for small time puckers like this one.

Quite naturally, the political establishment is trying to downplay the Ron Paul phenomenon, but the market, as always, reigns supreme, and Paul's growing popularity is evidenced in his fundraising success: this quarter, he comes in third in the Republican field, ahead of former frontrunner John "Bombs Away" McCain, and does so with a solid constituency of dedicated and very active supporters, especially among the young. Paul's message of personal liberty and a sane foreign policy resonates with the 20-something set, and as the candidate travels around the country, attracting relatively large crowds, youthful faces predominate.

His rising status as the candidate of the youthful Republican set is enhanced by the fact that he seems unlikely to be a cult hero of any sort. With his easygoing, unpretentious manner and undisputed sincerity, Ron Paul comes across as authentic.

Born plain Dennis, he renamed himself Justin, while attending the Cherry Lawn School, a defunct prep school in Darien, Conn., which he graduated in 1970.

Past the asshole veneer, that quote you put up seems pretty true to me. A lot of youth are falling for Paul, mainly it seems due to internet buzz. It can't be from actually watching or listening to the schmuck..

I think its wrong to say "Republican set" because most of the kids I know are for in despite him being a Republican. They have a whole song and dance about how the GOP hates him but puts up with him to get his procedural vote or whatever it is that determines the balance of power in the House. Its pretty embarassing because alot of college-aged kids who consider themselves pretty sharp -- and have enough exposure to know better -- are star-struck over this asshole. Its surprising how deep they will dig, and how low they will go to defend the fucker. For instance, they're all very well-versed in the controversy surrounding the Paul article about the LA riots that we discussed here. They quickly point out that RP has delivered plenty of black babies..they're pretty sure anyway. And he fired the staffer responsible for the Ron Paul Survival Newsletter. So thats that. Not a racist, nope, no sire.
