View Full Version : Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) is nowhere to be found
SC governor's whereabouts unknown, even to wife
11 minutes ago
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Where is South Carolina's governor?
The lieutenant governor doesn't know, and neither does a state senator who's a close confidante. Even Gov. Mark Sanford's wife is in the dark.
Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said he's been told the governor's staff is in contact with the second-term Republican, but Sanford's wife said she hasn't heard from him in several days, including Father's Day.
"He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids," Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press while vacationing with the couple's four sons at their Sullivans Island beach house. She said she didn't know where he was, but wasn't concerned.
Sanford, who's also chairman of the Republican Governors Association, earned a reputation as the nation's most vocal anti-bailout governor by refusing $700 million in federal stimulus money for schools until he lost a court battle earlier this month.
His spokesman Joel Sawyer released a statement saying the governor was taking a break after losing the fight.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford’s staff said late Monday that the governor is hiking on the Appalachian Trail, ending four days during which staff and state officials said they had not heard from him.
Neither Sanford’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford since he left the mansion Thursday in a black Suburban SUV assigned to his security detail, said state Sen. Jake Knotts , R-Lexington, and three others familiar with the situation, but who declined to be identified.
Joel Sawyer, the governor’s spokesman would not disclose where on the trail the governor was hiking, nor would he reveal whether Sanford was hiking alone.
Sanford’s last known location was near Atlanta late last week. A mobile telephone tower there picked up a signal from his phone, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Since then, the governor’s state and personal phones had been turned off, and Sanford had not responded to phone or text messages, a source said. Most mobile phones cannot be tracked if they are turned off.
First lady Jenny Sanford said Monday her husband has been gone for several days over Father’s Day weekend and she did not know where.
She said she was not concerned.

Anyone want to venture a guess what "hiking the Appalachian Trail" is a euphemism for?

"Where's Jack and Betty?"
"I think they are out 'hiking the Appalachian trail' - if you know what I mean."
"Ewwwwwwe!"
Columbia (WLTX) - Governor Mark Sanford's former press secretary says the governor's actions are nothing new; this time, he just got caught.
Will Folks worked with Sanford during his first term in office and now runs a website called Fitsnews.com. He says he'd been in situations where he couldn't reach the governor, just not for this long.
"He's a guy who doesn't like to be fenced in. He values his space. He values his time away from the political madhouse," said Folks.
In fact, he says it wasn't uncommon for him to take a break after the legislative session. He says it'd be marked "private time" on the governor's calendar, but it would usually have a phone number where he could be reached.
"On the one hand, was it something that was pretty dumb? Sure," said Folks. "It is something deserving of the 'Jon and Kate' treatment? I don't know."

mmmm yeah
CNN: Sanford's Vehicle Located at Columbia Metro Airport
Columbia (WLTX, CNN) - According to CNN, the black Chevy Suburban believed to have been used by Gov. Mark Sanford to leave town has been found in the parking lot of Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
CNN says they were alerted to its location by a law enforcement official.
According to CNN, a baseball cap, running shoes, sunscreen, a pair of shorts, a canvas bag and a sleeping bag can all be seen inside the vehicle.
CNN also says a parking permit for the school attended by Sanford's children is visible on the windshield.
According to the Governor's spokesman Joel Sawyer, Sanford will be back in South Carolina Wednesday, ending his hiking trip out of state. But that still hasn't stopped questions about the excursion.

What in holy Hell has Mark Sanford been up to? He did NOT go nude tree-humping with a bunch of federally funded nature queers on the Appalachian Trail this weekend; instead, he went to Buenos Aires. Anybody who has left the house thinking they’d like to go on a local nature hike and ended up spending the weekend in an exotic South American capital can agree that this is a perfectly normal switcheroo!
A single South Carolina newspaper cornered Sanford this morning at the Atlanta airport, which he flew into so that he could avoid being pestered by this bothersome press corps that demands to know where a state’s chief executive is every single second of the frigging day.
Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media. The State Media Company was the only media who greeted Sanford this morning.
Bravo, The State Media Company! Who do they know that hates Sanford enough to rat him out like that?
When asked why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, “I don’t know.”
Sanford later said “in fairness to his staff,” he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
OH WELL THEN.
So here is the question: does anybody actually believe that he went off for a few days to “decompress” following a difficult legislative session when his wife issues ominous quotes about his needing to be alone to do some writing, and then asks the press to “leave us to our privacy”? Does that really sound like a family that is suffering, emotionally, due to politics?

And the people who elected him - schmucks too if they put up with this.
otoh maybe not such a bad idea.
- I think I'd like it if all government officials ran off into the woods.

which as we know from the time Bush bought property there, has no extradition treaty with the U.S. and has large swathes of land owned by the Moonies.
There's probably some really nasty, impeachable scandal brewing, and Sanford was in South America closing on a Paraguayan hideaway.

...first snippets of The E-Mails i've found:
http://www.thestate.com/sanford/story/839350.html
funny thing is, the most pornographic thing i've found is this:
“Got back an hour ago to civilization and am now in Columbia after what was for me a glorious break from reality down at the farm. No phones ringing and tangible evidence of a day's labors. Though I have started every day by 6 this morning woke at 4:30, I guess since my body knew it was the last day, and I went out and ran the excavator with lights until the sun came up. To me, and I suspect no one else on earth, there is something wonderful about listening to country music playing in the cab, air conditioner running, the hum of a huge diesel engine in the back ground, the tranquillity that comes with being in a virtual wilderness of trees and marsh, the day breaking and vibrant pink coming alive in the morning clouds - and getting to build something with each scoop of dirt.”
I mean, what exactly was he doing in Argentina for 5 days? I frankly don't see him hanging out with his mistress all day, you know, having arguments then making up like some ridiculous soap opera. I mean those sad little love emails are not exactly the work of some Casanova. And why did they get published an hour after his press conference? The whole thing seems like such a sideshow. Could he have been up to more sinister things in Argentina or elsewhere?
Stay tuned for next time, on "As The Governor Turns".

although I don't know what 9/11 would have to do with it.
Nevertheless, Sanford was a high-powered investment banker and he did attend the Bilderberger meeting in VA last year (which Obama and Hillary secretly attended.)
The fact that he was being mentioned as a 2012 candidate makes it much more suspicious that he could just sneak off from his job for days at a time. It just doesn't seem right.
Some people are speculating that the "Maria" story is cover for actually dating a man, a transsexual, or being involved with pedophilia. I have no idea, but the whole love story we're seeing seems a little too cute to be true.

This all seems so pat. I mean the first news stories said that his wife, when asked, said she had no idea where the Gov was or what he was doing. She said he had gone out in some sort of PC equivalent of "to buy a pack of cigarettes" and never came back.(!) Why did she blow his cover? They were supposedly still "friends" and she has said more recently that she "supports" him. (?)
I agree that this whole story arc just doesn't pass the smell-test...

...except, perhaps, about the 'cover story for a man' part...given the animals he (politically) parties with, it's more than plausable.
What i find so curious about GOP sex scandals is that they really are about sex (and sometimes money, as in the hushing type allegedly paid by Ensign to his hottie's family as 'severence pay'). Vitter? Gingrich? Ensign? Crist? Foley? Craig? Delay? I am reminded that while few sociopaths are successful, the most successful in the professions (law, medicine, business, politics) or callings (clergy) are disproportionately sociopathic. For some reason (WASP country-club culture? Hanging around too many Funny-Mentalists?) they all tend to spell hubris as S...E...X...go figure.
But look at the bright side: this confers front-runner status on Sanford for '12 GOP presidential primaries by allowing him to claim with honesty he is the most experienced in foreign 'affairs'. And the GOP was estatic, because 1) it was a woman (at least, so far), and 2) it proves how much they really do 'love' Hspanics (if they look like Jennifer Lopez instead of Sonia Sotomayer). I think the only bombshell left unexploded will be taking these sexcapade junkets on the SC-taxpayers dime...

"I think the only bombshell left unexploded will be taking these sexcapade junkets on the SC-taxpayers dime..." Well, here it is...
"Per a statement, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admits that he visited his mistress during a trade mission last year. He says he's reimbursing the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of the trip." What? only ONE leg?

Well, I suggest - look deeper.
Look - After all what are the chances of MJackson AND Farah Fawcett dying on the same day?!
Was either of them at Bilderberg?
Probably not. Still...put this together with the train crash and the governor and what do you have?
