Gunfire and at least four explosions have been heard near where anti-government protesters are camping in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

It is not known who was doing the shooting but the sounds come after the government announced it will impose a military lockdown on the area in an effort to evict the Red Shirts.

Reports say a pro-Red Shirt General has been seriously wounded in the shooting and others are being treated in hospital.

The protest zone is in Rajprasong which is a posh area of shopping malls, hotels and upscale apartments.

Thailand's government and army chiefs have changed their strategy against street protesters barricaded in a commercial quarter of Bangkok.

Officials said they would shoot "terrorists" who defied the new lockdown.

The Red Shirts have said they will never surrender and will fight the troops with "bare hands".

The government has warned hospitals to have staff and ambulances ready for any violence and businesses have been told to let their employees take Friday off.
