1875 - White Democrats kill several blacks in terrorist attacks in Vicksburg

1881 - Booker T Washington establishes Tuskegee Institute (Alabama)

1892 - James Keir Hardie chosen 1st socialist in British Lower house

1941 - Politburo of Yugoslav communist party reorganizes

1970 - 100 injured in race rioting in Asbury Park NJ

My guess, especially given his hopeful conclusion, is that were Douglass alive today he would speak about America in a way that resembles Obama's depiction—in the body of his public remarks over 20 years—in the broadest sense.

And this is how liberals remember the 4th, by comparing Obama to Frederick Douglas to Obama. Man, what is that smell? Somehow I think that Douglas might find more agreement with Malcolm X.

Cause ya gotta be 'positive' ya see, don't wanna harsh the buzz, don't wanna be one of them racist Obama haters.

Jesus. I think it would be more apt to compare Obama with Calvin Coolidge. But if it has to be a "Douglas" I would pick Stephen A. Douglas...politics are closer...
