Press Statement (http://www.icsbrussels.org/ICS/2012/resolutions_ao/ICS2012_Press_EN.pdf)

From 18 to 20 May 2012, 59 communist and workers' parties from 49 countries gathered in Brussels for the 21th International Communist Seminar. They exchanged views and experiences on the relation between the immediate tasks of communists and their struggle for socialism. Participants came from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and Europe.

At sessions devoted to each of the continents, every delegate presented his party's analysis of the capitalist crisis and its consequences in his country, the anti-worker and anti-people austerity measures put in place, the popular protest movement against them, and the party's work and demands in such conditions. Also explained and discussed was each party's understanding of the struggle for an alternative to capitalist society, for socialism.

The Seminar promotes the exchange of information and concrete experiences in order to better understand the reality of countries which often live very different situations. Respecting differences of opinion that unavoidably exist among the Seminar participants, and after lively and rich discussions, a document with general conclusions was adopted. It will be submitted to the world's communist and workers' parties for their signature.

At the very moment the NATO Summit was meeting in Chicago, USA, the Brussels Seminar adopted a resolution saying “no” to NATO and calling for its abolition. There were also Seminar resolutions on solidarity with Cuba, on the situation in the Arab world and particularly in Palestine, and in support of the “no” vote in the referendum in Ireland on the European fiscal treaty, on May 31.

Before concluding the three-day Seminar, the participants agreed to meet again from 24 to 26 May 2013, to discuss a related topic: the front and alliance work of communist and workers' parties, both for immediate demands and for longer-term goals. The General Conclusions, the resolutions and papers of the 21th International Communist Seminar will be available at www.icsbrussels.org, in several languages.
