Can't help but wonder if US policy towards post USSR Russia takes into account not just the "defeated" socialists state but the socialist people who having known socialism and having been force fed the bitter fruit of capitalism might make a highly informed choice in this matter in a very visible manner. Putin is a complicated cat. He pushed back on the nascent oligarchs and reversed privatization. On the other hand he ain't no commie. I think he is steering the old "middle-road" of the non-aligned while Russia goes from smashed, back to world power. The claim is that Medvedev is more "Western".
