The move, which repudiates even the most modest targets for greenhouse gas emissions reductions, takes place amidst growing conflicts between the major powers and a raging political crisis within the US.

The near-universal support for the Paris agreement by the major financial and corporate giants, including many of the big energy transnationals, exposes the agreement as one that above all protects profit interests.

Yep, this was abundantly clear in the run up to the announcement. If ya didn't smell a rat then yer probably a liberal.

As explained in this article, The Paris Agreement isn't worth the paper its written & signed on. The intense anger from the more far-sighted bourgeoisie comes from the fact that fancy wallpaper is being taken down, and their bankruptcy on global warming will be exposed to the working people of the world. Capitalist 'democracy' needs veneering, and Trump is stripping that away everywhere with his fascist attacks. This is the essence of the conflict in Washington. The working class must intervene, as there is no progressive faction among the capitalists.

This from the comments. Yes, it seems that at least part of the ruling class is abandoning all pretense, dispensing with the political class and if not taking direct control then placing their personal retainers in positions of power. The cooler heads among our oligarchy understand that this is a massive mistake and whip their liberal minions into a frenzy in defense of illusion. We should make this an education moment.

Even a fascist hippy like Jerry Brown knows that the Paris Accord is useless as a sack of dingo kidneys. Something is sometimes better than nothing, but there's nothing really here at all but an toothless commitment to do a little something as long as it does not adversely affect the capitalist bottom line. And there's the real problem, we'll get nowhere with the anarchic completion and deranged priorities of capital, we'll not get anything effective done without a planned economy.

In truth Trump's directives to federal agencies have a more deleterious effect, disappearing the science upon which sane political decisions might be made.

tweet thread from @chinahand

context of paris accord: it was bs deal that obama admin lobbied for fanatically to show US was leading on climate change optics even tho US

couldn't ratify Kyoto or pass cap & trade but still wanted "leader" status. Trump casting Paris aside makes a mockery of 8 years of US

exhortations to force other countries to sign on. US prestige as global lawgiver dinged, that's why almost every tweet you see is mourning

setback to "world leader" cred. US accounts for 15% of global greenhouse gases. Impact of any US loosening pretty minor. We're all f*cked

anyway. China/India/ROW will continue to grow emissions w/o binding caps or global offset incentives a la Kyoto. & trillions needed for

adaptation in at risk countries but that's not coming anyway. 4 deg rise coming. It's not coz Trump sh*tcanned Dr. Feelgood's

Climate Change Teddy Bear Picnic. ok rant over

The point about loss of prestige holds as far as the liberal commentary goes, 'Trump makes US look stupid again". But that does not explain the busload of CEOs moaning & groaning, they know they're gonna need that figleaf, and they expend a lot of effort protecting the capitalist 'brand'. But Trump doesn't really understand basic capitalism any more than imperialism. Son of a slum lord with the mentality of a petty booj rentier, he really is unfit to run a vampire empire, which, on a certain level, I rejoice in.
