If there isn't any recognition that we got the message and we are trying to recalibrate and do things differently, we are not only going to risk looking ignorant but arrogant." - [link:www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/31693.html#ixzz0d7QZk4ks|New York Rep. Anthony Weiner] in the aftermath of the loss of Teddy Kennedy's senate seat.
A comment from days gone by from the disconcertingly continually prescient Anax:
[i]While the current Democrats and "progressives" invoke the images of the New Deal and FDR, they are really artifacts of the 1960s. Born in Camelot and JFK, fueled by the entry of "anti-war activists", civil rights "veterans," and "advocates" of all kinds, mobilized by RFK and Clean Gene campaigns and empowered by the vast influx of fresh meat, sold on the need of working "within the system" into the party, every illusion of today's Libs seems new but is actually terribly old.
So too are the illusions and ideas of this "movement." Reaffirmed again and again by the supposed ability of a "progressive culture" to actually "reform" a politic tarnished but not "broken", the bullshit of our day seems to draw almost exclusively on the lessons of Watergate and the Church Committee and the past successes of Civil Rights programs and various "initiatives"... "not the whole loaf perhaps but not crumbs either..."
It seems to me that all of that is over with this election. Nothing, nothing, nothing that these clowns have tried has "worked". In fact, in place of aging "Liberals," rotting away in their Senate seats, they have managed to enable bipartisan agreements on Imperial wars and the elimination of 200 year old Constitutional elements, the election of three "center" Democratic Presidents (Carter, Clinton, and ... Obama) who have done nothing but "enable" the hated Republicans, the usurpation of even their "Web" and its unique ability to extract cash from the flush suburbs, and the actual growth of contempt for their "power" by every end of the established political spectrum.
So, where do the "left Democrats" go now? New party? Fuck political parties? Personal disillusionment? What? Or, do they pick themselves up and try it yet again with minor revisions to the "plan"?
