Goldman Sachs on pace for record bonuses: report (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE55L29M20090622)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc is on pace to make record bonus payouts after a robust first half, the Guardian newspaper reported on Sunday.

Goldman staff in London were briefed on the outlook and told they could look forward to the bonus hikes if the company registers its most profitable year ever, the report said.

The surge in projected profit can be attributed to a lack of competition and increased revenue from trading foreign currency, bonds and fixed-income products, the newspaper said, citing insiders at the firm.

Bonuses have been a point of contention between the Obama administration and Wall Street, which last fall endured a credit crisis that paralyzed the financial markets. The U.S. Treasury responded with the Troubled Asset Relief Program, which made $700 billion in loans available to banks.

Goldman Sachs received $10 billion from TARP, which it repaid last week.

In letters to lawmakers last week, Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein said the firm is obligated to "ensure that compensation reflects the true performance of the firm and motivates proper behavior."

A Goldman Sachs spokesman in New York was not immediately available to comment on Monday.

Unfortunately Warren, not Jimmy, as a big stake in Goldman.

Anyone looking at him in the collapse.

He endorses Schwarzenegger. Arnold elected. Goldman sells CA bonds, then rec's against them. Buffett starts insurance coimpany for troubled government entities, counties states. CA about to go broke. Where does Buffett make out or is just a series of lousy judgements? This question may be to random to even consider;)

If there's anyone who deserves a wing in the gallery of assholes it's this dude. I believe he is one of the key guys calling the shots from the boardroom. Check out Obama's "Audacity of Change" book for the details on how Obama was summoned to meet with Buffet in the early campaign days. Obama may have ego, drive, and marketing skills, but Buffet is the bucks behind him. I'm convinced of that. Look at who benefits from the banks being bailed out and subsequent raise of the stock market. Nobody benefits more than Buffet in all this, and I'm not buying his "I'm just a guy from Kansas driving my old car to work" shtick.

He could dump 90% of his wealth (and still be more comfortable than 99% of the people...) that would earn him a little bit of the philanthropist title some grant him...Bill Gates too...

Buffett's connection to Goldman goes back to his mentor Sidney Weinberg (1891-1969).

GS has apparently become a Weinberg franchise: Weinberg's son John Livingston Weinberg (dad married one of the patroon Livingstons) was senior partner 1974-84 & the only partner 1984-1990.

JL Weinberg's son, cousin, uncle, nephew etc. have been or are also associates.

But Hannah, he pulled himself up by his bootstraps!!

Weinberg started with Goldman Sachs as a $3-a-week janitor's assistant.[2] After a World War I stint in the Navy, he became a securities trader . He became a Goldman Sachs partner in 1927 and helped run the investment trusts, including Goldman, Sachs Trading Corp. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Weinberg

Wow, imagine going from a janitor's assistant to a securities trader. Apparently the duties overlapped though because these rich fucks have flushed the country down the toilet.

Maybe, but I read there was a family connection that got him in the door in the first place.
