April 12, 13:48

At this festival a little strange fate. Despite the fact that the event itself was a truly universal human value, it is celebrated with us almost routinely, there is no such intense public attention as the theme of World War II, although the victory was earlier than Gagarin flew into space.

Of course, in terms of generations, one way or another related to the war, the victory went to the cost of 26 million. Life is more significant than the first manned flight into space, but if you think about how they would evaluate the descendants of these events through the years 200-300, the along with the victory will inevitably recall and triumph of the Soviet space program, which is one of the main peaks of Soviet civilization. Now all this is perceived more as a matter of course, without a host of mega-inspirational celebrations vsegosudarstvennogo scale. Around 12 April, on the one hand there is enough monolithic view of society, on the other hand, in contrast to the Second World War, indeed hold society together (it we have one of the few truly reliable braces - no matter how trying to liquidate could not), Cosmonautics Day this role does not perform, due to "trivialize" the theme of space exploration and space flight. This process is gaining strength not only for us but also for Americans in 70-80 years when the romance of space exploration eroded from the mass collective consciousness. Time when the cosmonauts and astronauts just visited a few hours in space became heroes of generations - is gone. Most do not even know who it was now hanging around in orbit, let alone the fact that even some Chinese somewhere departed, and did have heard half an ear. Were heroes icons - we Gagarin and other "apostles cosmonauts / astronauts), Americans Armstrong (now do without controversy on the subject of the moon). In all other respects, the triumph of the consumer society is very strongly contrasts with the celebration of events that seem to oppose the idea public consumption, giving priority to development, built on the basis of mobilization. After all, we and the Americans, space programs were in fact very similar in nature, where the state to mobilize all possible reserves on the project, very far from the ideals of the consumer, where the cornerstone were delivered to the scientific, military and research purposes. And in those years, the question "Why is it necessary?" and whether it is necessary to spend all this vast resources - not even standing. The masses were convinced that they need it. But now, most of the theme space exploration in general, indifferent, even though the holiday is celebrated and revered heroes. But the theme of mobilizing resources for such global projects now very far from the mainstream of public inquiries. As a result, the festival marked a breakthrough in human space and opened the door into the cosmic future of all humanity, now seen as a monument to the great achievements of the past, rather than as an important step towards a man to the stars. Nevertheless, the request for space exploration, there are realistic or not the projects and searchlights modern Russian Space certain response do find. Of course much space can hardly be done in one of the pillars of the absence of national ideas, but real enough interest in construction of a new Russian space station and sending automated vehicles to other planets (as well as the controversy surrounding the less realistic projects like the flight to the Moon and Mars) reflects presence in society quite substantial request for such forms of domestic scientific and technological development, which could not completely suppress even a quarter-century triumph of consumer ideology, where Gagarin on the one hand has become a brand and product in the community "buy-sell", but on the other hand, he kept a kind of "scientific sacredness" remains, for many people a symbol of the aspirations of the people who set it apart from the animals. There is even a kind of ideological dispute expressed in vulgar discussion "aggravated" after the annexation of Crimea to Russia. - Yura, I'm sorry, we're all about ... there. - Yura, we fix it. - Yura, we fix it. banal nature of the debate on the future of the Lost post-Gagarin generations, through the prism of today's holiday can be viewed as a kind of clash of opinions - whether there were all the prospects of a bright future in the past, or else all is not lost. In our society is experiencing a crisis of scientific thought, the man who became a symbol of scientific atheism, sported a poster with the words "There is no God" and the famous phrase "No, I had not seen Nick god there." now gained unique features pseudo-saint, to which unconsciously appeal to both some abstract ideal of a man who was right. Right because the Soviet, Russian right because, because our right. This is part of our ideal, although it would seem this is just the man to do what he did after hundreds of people. As in the case of the Great Patriotic War and Stalin ideological support is sought in the past, because modern Russia has not formed a clear masses ideology of development, which can perform would be to lean and stop revel only bylymi achievements and heroes of yesteryear. The authorities even officially for many years tried to develop some new ideology for Russia, publicly admitting that the successor to the communist ideology of consumption does not meet the challenges of development. But the years went by and over again officially priznavlos that so long as nothing came up, although we can not say that did not try, but the output until that one out ersatz. This year's Day of Cosmonautics very entertaining coincided with the religious holiday of Easter, which is why there is a curious dual symbolic - where religious celebrations are combined with honoring of "quasi-scientific saint" who was one of the symbols of the denial of religious precepts. That's the modern Russia, in the absence of state ideology and national idea we are witnessing a kind of conglomerate of very contradictory ideas and ideologies, often polar to each other, but nevertheless coexisting in a confined space. It's like Stalin (which by the way, too, sometimes "ikoniziruyut" both literally and figuratively), where at the same time trying to put a monument in his honor at the same time exposing it as a "bloody tyrant." Behind all this ideological pluralism, lost development guidelines that interpret either as the inability of the current elites to define these guidelines, or blamed on the postmodern nature of the modern structure of society, at the same time when there is some sort of guidance, but they are semantic deconstruction. As a result, the question of the way in which the country has to go on is still open, but due to the complicated by the foreign policy situation that threatens the very suschestvovavniyu country, he certainly will continue to be one of the most exciting for the community. I would like to hope that we can actually correct and get on the path along which 54 years ago no one had not known Yuri Gagarin flew to a brighter future for all humanity and its own historical immortality.

In Huntsville, AL there is an annual "Yuri's Day" party. They have fireworks and all the restaurants and breweries setup outdoor venues. It is almost like a Mardi Gras thing. It is really unusual for any Russian (especially a Commie!) to be celebrated, but this is Huntsville, "The Rocket City" and they love them some cosmonauts. It is kind of strange.

It is good to see that anything can get past Cold War programming. Not only a Communist and Russian but an atheist too, gotta be some cognative dissonance going on there.

Yeah, I think that they do not dwell very much on those facts; but space travel as an excuse to party? You bet!
