For years, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been trying to convince Chicagoans that their city, one of the centers of global capital, cannot afford quality public schools for their children. Again and again, the mayor has cried budget crisis to justify closing schools, laying off educators, cutting special education, and bullying the teachers union.
But now, as Mayor Emanuel reads from the same playbook yet again, like the boy who cried wolf, people have stopped buying his story.

Of course Rahm wants to cut public school budgets. Those schools are only there to give the working class children enough training so that they can be employed. The type and level of employment that will be available for them does not require a very elevated level of training - the basics will suffice. If they cannot read above a fourth grade level, that is quite sufficient for the tasks they will be called upon to do (most will either be unemployed or semi-employed, so it really doesn't matter). This is austerity projected into the future. Save money now, and need less in the future - win-win.
Now these budget cuts in no way effect Private Schools. The elite, the bourgeoisie and their immediate underlings, will educate their own children to take their rightful place as the next generation's ruling class. How long the working class continues to allow this idiocy is the question. The smug self assuredness of the bourgeoisie is galling, but they seem to be well justified in their smugness. The unions are all but gone - no one appears interested anymore (I wonder how curt is doing). The CPUSA is now an admitted lapdog of the ruling class (along with the Trots - who won't admit it).
Rahm is squarely in line with this society/government/culture. While he deprives working class kids of any workable education, the elite "left" wring their hands about "message" and "humanity" and the essence of "person-ness". Poor, working class kids growing into convicts, servants, canon fodder, consumers, and viewers - that's the fucking message.
Sorry, bad morning...
