SocIndy is running.

http://socialistindependent.org/board/

You can -

Sign up there and log in and post. We have complete control over there, so we can have a lot more confidence posting there than here.

Post here of you like, of course, but keep in mind that we are going to take a "snapshot" of this site soon and save it as a static archive.

Offer suggestions for categories, forums and sub-forums.

Copy posts here and paste them over there.

Get admin or mod capabilities.

The new software is more user friendly, but is a little different than this software. Feel free to ask "how to" questions.

1) The popindy domain is paid for again. I will repoint it to the new site at such time as that is desirable

2) Will there be any sort of front end or do you intend just another sink-to-the-the-bottom discussion board? I thought I might finish scanning/proofing a project dating back to the summer this week while I am off, but if there is nowhere to put it...

3) Someone needs to buy the new domain. I cannot put whois privacy on it and have no desire to be the lightening rod if you successfully grow the site.

trotsky's right there on the front page, in a detail from that diego rivera mural... it could give people the wrong idea...

If I recall aright, it was a favorite of Newswolf who was at least somewhat sympathetic to Trotsky..I don't know who decided to put the mural there..I think its been up for months

On a side note, I've been somewhat turned around on Trotsky himself. I still ain't shedding any tears for him, but there is a goodly amount of useful material that can be culled from his writings. I've come to appreciate that he kept his finger on the pulse of really happening historical events as his guide. He's not quite so insufferable in his historical writings as in his personal writings either..for what that's worth..

i'm sure trotsky has his redeeming qualities. but there are plenty of leftwing message boards out there already teeming with trots, e.g., revleft — and that place is a total mess. i've just noticed they don't add much to the discussion beyond trolling.

just a suggestion... i don't mean to give advice where it's unsolicited.

Don't get me wrong if there was a vote, I'd be in the "take it down" camp. Revleft is kind of juvenile if I remember correctly..there are some mailing lift that are mainly ex-SWPers that are more "serious"..which come to think of it is just a euphemism for doddering actually..

The sectarian places are pretty much totally insular and irrelevant IMO. You could probably use them to find chapter and verse from Marx on something, but you'd have to wipe off the slimy layer of "interpretation" they slathered on first..

are you talking about marxmail? yes, "doddering" is how i would describe most of the content there. there's a *half decent* progressive-economist mailing list (http://www.mail-archive.com/pen-l@lists.csuchico.edu/) i read sometimes, where michael perelman contributes, along with one or two third worldist types. and louis proyect too but that dude is, like, everywhere. :/

We can revive those plans.

We could transfer it to new ownership.

Yeah Marxmail is one of the worst offenders although there are other similar lists if you search hard enough. I have no idea what they think they're accomplishing. Is PEN-L Henwood's list? You can break every subscriber into one of two categories with much crossover: sectarian nitwit and/or insufferable blowhard.

I read it for awhile, it's insanity..and Proyect is a douchebag

Hey Rusty amble on over if you get a chance and check it out. If you're talking about scanning in the works of Pisarev or Chernyshevsky we'll definitely figure out a place to put it

I don't have any special ideas I just wanted to make sure I'm not crazy and missing a link. A link would be cool because currently it is a very long url to link to, so it would be nice to just be able to type socialistindependent.org

Because chlamor would not be happy if everyone he knew didn't move away every so often... without telling him.

Is "Socialist-Independent" a contradiction in terms?

That "independent" thing goes back to Tinoire - progressive independent > populist independent > socialist independent. Funny we got stuck on the independent part of it. Had she named her site progressive underground...

Maybe you guys should have shut this one down temporarily, while you moved everything over.Have you solved the problems of posts that are too long,or how to get the person's avatars in each of the posts that you transfer over. ?

Sorry I've been away.I'm just getting my faculties back, after my last round of SLEs.[/u]

I think we are OK with keeping both boards live, and all threads live as far as that goes, eattherich. There is no rush to move everything, and no damage done if people post in the middle of a thread while it is being moved.

People are using the proxy account to move things, and then indicating who the original poster was by pasting their user name and avatar into the top of each post. There is a post over at socindy with templates for doing that.

I took care of the post length problem.

Is "Socialist-Independent" a contradiction in terms?

No, actually... not at all. The commies were historically fiercely "independent", with organizations coming and going. It was the Bolshevik Revolution which changed that... for a time. Now, if we were livin' in tunnels and being carpet bombed by B-52s, it might be a different story.
