Editors' Note: Ordinarily, the matter below, a notice of disaffiliation from the AFL-CIO made public by the ILWU, would not necessarily be a prime concern of this web site.Â* However, the ILWU makes points (which we bold below) about theÂ* rightward drift of the AFL-CIO that deserve wider understanding, a drift that, in our view, goes to the heart of the crisis of the US labor movement. Brother Trumka: It is with regret but resolve that we have come to the point where the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) must cut formal ties with the AFL-CIO. http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?d=yIl2AUoC8zA (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?a=8wk_IbhbxZc:VfdmohsZfAw:yIl2AUoC8zA) http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?d=qj6IDK7rITs (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?a=8wk_IbhbxZc:VfdmohsZfAw:qj6IDK7rITs) http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?i=8wk_IbhbxZc:VfdmohsZfAw:F7zBnMyn0Lo (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?a=8wk_IbhbxZc:VfdmohsZfAw:F7zBnMyn0Lo) http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?i=8wk_IbhbxZc:VfdmohsZfAw:gIN9vFwOqvQ (http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/ml2day-recent?a=8wk_IbhbxZc:VfdmohsZfAw:gIN9vFwOqvQ)

Hurray for the ILWU!

As a labor movement, we need to stand up and be the voice for our members and working people. We cannot continue to compromise on the issues that benefit and protect the working men and women of America.

The larger the labor organization the better, but only if it actually and actively represents the working class. I wonder if there are other unions and worker organizations out there who might join with the ILWU to form a new CIO?
