In his introduction, Julian Bell states he wrote this book out of his love for Vincent van Gogh the "the uniquely exciting painter" and "the letter writer of heart-piercing eloquence." His book, however, was to explore the third side of van Gogh – the "social animal."

Bell is a painter and writer and the grandson of painter Vanessa Bell, the sister of Virginia Woolf.
