Thousands of workers at Turkish auto plants partially owned by Fiat and Renault went on strike Monday, demanding wage increases in a market that has grown in recent years because it has lower labor costs than most of Europe.
The first walkout happened at a plant in the northwest city of Bursa that is a joint venture of Renault and Oyak, which manages the Turkish army pension fund. Management told the Ahromonline news service that about half the plant's 5,000 workers joined the strike.
Hundreds of workers from Coskunoz, an equipment manufacturer, have been on strike since Saturday. That action spread Monday to another auto parts maker, Mako.
Strikers have been asking for wage increases in line with those at other industrial firms in Bursa, where one factory was reported to offer its workers an increase of as much as 60%.
