Why would you post something like this?

Political maps show political boundaries.
Google probably won't show us Mespotamia, Hibernia, Gaul, Dacia, Germania, and other areas that are no longer names for political regions.
"Palestine" was never a country, but rather a creation of the British, an imperial military district with a puppet government. If the British still ruled it and called it that, then that word would bring up a map.
i posted it because i was looking for a map with roads & there wasn't one. There wasn't even a map. i think it's weird. i don't think "Palestine" is the equivalent of "Dacia," but whatever.
on edit, cause it's bugging me, & at the risk of losing internet friends:
1. there's no country officially called "america," either, & never has been, but google maps locates it exactly where they locate "usa," "US," & "united states of america".
2. when you say "palestine," anyone who follows the news knows where you're talking about; the name is commonly used on political boards such as DU.
3. the place colloquially called "palestine" has defined borders & a nominal government.
4. when you google the officially recognized name of this place--palestinian territories--you get this question:
"Did you mean:palestinian territories near Portland, OR"
& a map of the world with 7 balloons on it, 4 of which are in the US (e.g. one is a Bancorp office, which many people are obviously looking for when they google "palestinian territories") unlike when you google other names of countries or territories, which lead you directly to a map of the place/s.
when you click on the first balloon, labeled "palestinian territories," you're directed to a small map of the "palestinian national authority" office, which doesn't expand, i.e., it shows no "territory".
there are no balloons leading you to the choices "gaza strip" or "west bank," which would seem to be more logical than links to some bank in "america".
There are no "palestinian territories" in portland.
I googled "Palestine" because I was trying to match modern cities & roads to an old map with different names. I can't get a decent map acknowledging the existence this place on google maps, under any name except "gaza strip"/"west bank"/"israel".
I think it's weird, sue me, imply i'm a nazi, i think it's weird nonetheless.

Weird, maybe, but not surprising eh? Anyway no big deal hannah. Hate to see you walk right into Hamden's buzzsaw. I know BTA, and he is OK and no friend or ally to Hamden by a long shot.
By the way, I don't think that criticism of Israel is being suppressed to any degree by "false charges of anti-Semitism" as so many claim. I think the opposite is true. Many people are using criticism of Israel as cover for expressing anti-Semitism. I am not saying that you are doing that, of course, but that is the minefield you step into with things like you posted.

Your buddy, Mr. Dog, turns out to be a simple competitor:
I stopped reading at "I vote socialist ... Ralph Nader"

If you are going to vote socialist -- and that's certainly commendable -- then vote for an actual socialist or for the actual functional socialist party, or the candidate the actual, functional socialist party endorsed.
In the US that means Democratic Socialists of America, the country's largest, and only real functioning socialist party, with links to major trade unions, public intellectuals and activist organizations.
Oh wait. We can't and still be in cloud coo-coo land, because DSA endorsed:
While recognizing the critical limitations of the Obama candidacy and the American political system, DSA believes that the possible election of Senator Obama to the presidency in November represents a potential opening for social and labor movements to generate the critical political momentum necessary to implement a progressive political agenda.

Figures... Always talkin' about "Trots". Friggin' right-wing "socialist".
I guess it's a matter of personal taste but the only people I dislike more than DSA are at Goldman.

Hear hear. They are awful. "We are Socialists - who support Obama!"
Hamden says if you are going to be a Socialist, that means voting for the candidate that an "actual, functional socialist party" endorses.
The only legitimate way to be a Socialist is to vote Socialist, and the only legitimate way to vote Socialist is to not vote Socialist.
It IS a f*cking dessert topping AND a floor wax.

"Where we stand"

A new milestone in milquetoast. Look as I might I could not find anything about ending capitalism, just a lot of reformism, which I guess is as close as these 'liberal socialists' can get.
Nothing but a Democratic Party scam.

Apparently, it was innocent enough - offending liberal sensibilities. You can do that by changing from Air America to a head-banger station.

Hammy got axed? There will be some joy in Mudville tonight.
Sandnsea: "I always find it comical to be called DLC since I'm to the left of about 75% of the people I know, the other 25% being the local Democrats who are as left as DU but can't figure out why they have no influence in this town either."
She actually sees DU as far Left, and the only people to the left of her in real life are the "local Democrats" who she implies are an irrelevant fringe element.
I don't suppose it would ever occur to her that she is living among and associating with a select crowd and this distorts her perspective on things?

Doesn't he realize that DSA opposes baby seal clubbing, and that their positions on burning issues such as that are all they have got, and that this is the only basis for any claim to legitimacy, which is the foundation for his attacks on the Left??
HamsterRider just clubbed his own baby hamster to death.
At the rate this is going maybe we don't have so much work to do after all, they are eating each other at a remarkable pace.

Well, in that case, it must be your fault.
Seriously, seems like they're trying to take all of the edge off the place, worst of the reactionaries and going after ours with undisguised political motive.

thanks for responding. comforting to have someone to bitch to.
i was a bit out of line (rude) but after 40 posts putting words in my mouth (so, you're saying if daddy rapes his little girl, that's his culture? you freak!) & studiously missing my point, i didn't care much.
yep, it's pretty bland fare. edgy = speculating that obama might not be on the side of the gods.
i think it's been about 6 months since i read anything there that was of much interest. it feels like a dead end. ok, o. = phony, banksters rule, now what, kiddies? well, we can email the white house. we can not buy anything. we can go build our cabin & garden.
i worked out the dead end of those possibilities in my 30s.
i noticed the night threads don't move like they used to, either.
i think the hope brigade is dropping out & making their separate peaces, or getting prozac prescriptions, or stocking up on rice...
looks like midterms might see the pubs take seats, though they're a trainwreck too.
i have a young cousin who was so energized by obama, wrote me & everyone else in the family these wordy, idealistic emails--"yes we can!" -- & the videos i saw when o. won of some young black guys jumping fire hydrants in the streets, all excited -- "it changes *everything*, man!"
must need some prozac myself, the inevitable destruction of their best selves makes me tear up.
what a waste of goodwill & energy. i guess i had a bit of leftover hope myself -- for my cousin & those kids, at least -- that o. wouldn't be a complete sell-out. he's worse of a sell-out than i thought he'd be, in fact.
& du = a bunch of tunnel vision nuts cheering on ten-year jail time for some isolated mountain tribespeople in ugana who practice female circumcision. it's the kids grandmothers & mothers doing the circumcision, & of course putting them in jail for 10 years will save the children, per the liberal asshats. course they won't have family, & jailing the elders destroys the tribe, but whatever, save the children.
meanwhile, the ongoing covert war in congo/uganda/rwanda continues killing millions. That's irrelevant, though, it's more important to put these kids' parents in prison.
http://godparents.net/FGM/Pokot-girls-after-FGM.jpg
"In Uganda, FGM is practiced by a minority of the population, primarily the Sabiny (Sebei) and Pokot tribes, whose home areas are in eastern Uganda adjoining Kenya, on Mt. Elgon or in the Karamoja region. Parts of these areas are so remote and isolated that they are not reached by newspapers, radio, television, or outsiders; and many people living there have never heard of the idea of not practicing FGM...."

Me too... I've hated liberals since I was a kid. Always. It probably changed my life.
There is a sea change going on over there. To some extent, it will be stillborn because of Skinner's agenda but the Democratic site is feeling the Democratic Party schism which is exactly the same as the Republican Party split. Politics is being reformulated in America. The old slogans are tired... "What's good for GE is good for the country." Doubt it...
The problem is that ideology is dead again (for about the twentieth time in American history). We'll have to make it up one more time and hope that it isn't as goofy as the "New Left".
If you get banned (or even if you don't), you might try posting at PI. It has a "left-DU" rep even if it isn't exactly true. There are many more people reading it... though the Commies runnin' around the place are a little off-putting. Well, Commies gotta get their act together too... and it doesn't hurt that there is a bit of a threshold to cross. I suspect that we will see the discouraged begin to appear in ones and twos. Shit in America seems too easy, even though it usually ends up not.
As far as your subject matter, they have 500 years of practice: spreading Christianity to the heathen, Ending Slavery in Tanganyika, Preventing Tribal War in India, Ending Tyranny in Iraq, Bringing civilization to savages, Preventing Famine in Darfour, Helping women in Afghanistan... the shit never ends. The youngsters will have to get over that shit just as we overcame "Democracy for South Vietnam."
Otherwise, a Conquistador's work is never done.

Mike found an article by Paul Street from May that starts to get at reinventing ideology (or rather "remaking" since "reinventing" is pretty much an invitation to the most benighted flakiness)
The article is from May but it actually carries more weight now as things have come even more into focus regarding Obama
