[edit] What's all this about

Since 1998, the year after the Kyoto Protocol was founded, we have been following the money donated to the groups campaigning against the science of – and action on – global warming. The think tanks are largely American-based, although there are some based in the UK and Canada which Exxon funds. These funding figures have been published by ExxonMobil in annual reports on its website and collected, over the years, by Greenpeace and allies.

We have also sourced information from the Internal Revenue Service’s 990 forms, submitted by law by ExxonMobil. However, we know we do not have the full picture. Aside from missing data for 1999 when Exxon didn’t publish these grants, we don’t have the funding figures of groups ExxonMobil funds through other channels internationally. And we know of several grants and ‘projects’ Exxon has launched on this front that were not included in their public reports.

We have divided this section into three distinct groups: the organizations funded by ExxonMobil, the people who work for and with them, and the scientists they use to dispute the science.

...REPLY: Name calling and labeling does nothing but lower your own level of discourse, when you have no other facts to present, which is why alarmists often resort to name calling and labeling. I choose not to have that here, so please refrain from further remarks along those lines here. – Anthony (Watt from http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/05/17/quote-of-the-week-8-monbiot-looks-like-ive-boobed/) Well, maybe he broke his own rules with the term 'alarmist'.

Don't Greenpeace and Sierra Club and other so-called green organizations get much of their funding from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation, etc.? Exxon-Mobile is a Rockefeller Family company and Exxon is regrouping back to the infamous Standard Oil which was divided into individual FAMILY members ownership -- they still control all. Get it --- they lead from both sides of every issue. As Lenin, or was it Stalin pointed out: You control the opposition by leading it. Most of the rank and file are honest citizens concerned about environmental issues, but at the top it's WINK-WINK, NOD-NOD. Environmental fronts often get monies from the same sources as those on your list do. Controlling the world takes a lot of dough spent in a lot of places. (p.s. I am with you and the rank and file; I want a clean environment and a healthy world.)

For example, the Center for Environmnetal Education Research, receives that funding.

The fact is that no one can rationally argue that the emissions from zillions of cars around the would is harmless. They are releasing chemicals in large amounts that have always been known to have a profound effect upon our environment, and never for the positive.

Big Energy is trying to get the last dimes out of us, so, naturally, they do not want people reducing their use of Big Energy's gasoline (it would be extremely bad for the bottom line). People ARE reducing that usage because they are convinced of the negative effect those emissions have upon our environment. That will lead to less gasoline usage, and less profits for Big Energy. So, Big Energy must fight - through lies, misleading the public, and burying facts so that they never see the light of day.

Their efforts won't work with the members of this board, by and large, however.

Not Just the Usual Suspects: Power Companies and Big Oil, but Microsoft and eBay, too

WASHINGTON - May 20 - As Congress focuses this week on landmark legislation to reduce global warming, nearly 140 new businesses and interest groups— led by a diverse array of technology firms— have joined in the already intense lobbying on climate change, according to The Climate Lobby’s Nonstop Growth, a new analysis by The Center for Public Integrity.

Microsoft, Google, and eBay are among the technology firms that helped drive an increase of more than 14 percent in companies and organizations lobbying on climate in the first quarter of 2009, compared to the same period last year, Senate disclosure forms show. The 880 firms and groups that reported weighing in on climate policy are still dominated by big energy producers and users; more than half are manufacturers, power companies, or firms in the oil and gas industry.

California Democrat Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and his energy subcommittee chairman, Massachusetts Democrat Edward Markey, move forward this week with a mark-up of the American Clean Energy and Security Act. Their legislation seeks to curb the global warming threat through a complex cap-and-trade system. In its comprehensive analysis, the Center found that the interests weighing in on this issue are more diverse than ever. Those groups include not just technology firms, but food interests like the American Meat Institute and the National Turkey Federation; consumer goods manufacturers like Levi Strauss & Co. (active in a new business coalition organized by the investor group Ceres); and alternative transportation interests like Segway.
The Climate Top 10

The broad interest in the legislation has provided a particular bonanza for a small group of lobbying firms, some well-known, others less so. The Center found that just 10 lobbying firms represent nearly 100 of the businesses and interest groups seeking to influence the bill, including some of the largest trade organizations and companies most active in the debate. Led by Alpine Group and Ogilvy Government Relations, the Center’s Climate Top 10 have staffs replete with former government officials, and are a case study in the tradition of Capitol Hill staffers graduating from their public policy posts to serve as representatives for corporations.

The Center’s latest piece is part of its ongoing investigative series, The Climate Change Lobby. This project is generously supported by a grant from the Deer Creek Foundation. In addition, organizational support for the Center is provided by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Ford Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Open Society Institute, the Park Foundation, the Popplestone Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and many other generous institutional and individual donors.
