Hateful behavior indeed, and given the examples provided, utterly spiteful, lacking all strategic significance. As though the differences in provision of health care weren't stark enough. I have fancifully considered petitioning the Cuban reps at the UN for admission to Cuba as a medical refugee, though in truth I should not burden Cuba with America's problem.
I have one quibble about this article:
This is important, for it demonstrates what Noam Chomsky has argued numerous times before: that during the Cold War the U.S. intentionally pushed Third World countries guilty of declaring their independence from U.S. hegemony towards the Soviet Union so as to manufacture a convenient pretext for U.S. belligerence. And, the blockade initially imposed by Kennedy did just that.
Chomsky's hatred of the Soviet Union leads him to assume that revolutionary regimes had to be prodded by negative reinforcement into the Socialist camp. Perhaps the US even thought that's what it was doing, but to discount the fraternal aid and beneficence freely offered by the Soviets is worthy of a Cold Warrior.
