I've been trying to teach myself Russian, occasionally having phone conversations with my friend from St. Petersburg. Anybody here speak it?

Sadly I'm just another dumb ass American, mono-lingual. Tried Spanish a decade ago but the local cc dropped the program in favor of 'Command Spanish'.

As opposed to my knowledge of Spanish, I've been most successful reading Russian than speaking the language. For most of my life, my coworkers have been from El Salvador or Honduras so it's all been conversational. Mostly kitchen words and a plethora of homophobic phrases.

Do you read Cyrillic or Roman script? I've been doing c&p with Russian posts for 2 years & using gawd-awful google translator and hardly recognize 5 words...

Anax could read some if Roman, I think Kid was working on it at some time.

But I still speak 'Baltimorese'; 'zink', 'seegar', 'RADiator'.

I read Cyrillic. I'm very blessed to have made a close friend with a Russian girl at my last job. Not only do we talk on the phone now but we text using the Cyrillic keyboard. Say what you will about smart phones but...

One thing that's important with copy and paste and translators is that they don't use articles like English and sentence order can be abstract, by comparison. I'm sure you've incidentally discovered that already.

I'm not from Baltimore so my pronunciation is very "proper" by comparison. Poser, indeed.

Well then, perhaps one day you can give us a literary assessment of 'What is to be done' by Chernyshevsky and tell us if it is as awkward in Russian as it is translated into English. ))

Look no further than its title: Что дéлать? (shto delat) literally translates to "What To Do." Despite the lack of word sense, I kind of like "What To Do." It seems a little more ruthless and cunning... dare I say, "Authoritarian"? lol.

I'm going to designate this thread to dumb questions I'll ask. Wouldn't wanna oversaturate the grill. I'm writing an analysis of sectarianism in Modern Syria for a class and I was hoping someone could link me to solid, specific materliast pieces on nationalism. Doesn't need to be about Syria--could be general or relatable pieces by M&E, Lenin, anyone.

Fear not. I'm a writing major, not a poli sci wannabe. :)

Don't know if this is what you are talking about, but here are some things:

The Nationalist Movements of the Portuguese Colonies by Amilcar Cabral
https://www.marxists.org/subject/africa/cabral/1965/tnmpc.htm

Socialism and Nationalism by James Connolly
https://www.marxists.org/archive/connolly/1897/01/socnat.htm

This is just a couple - if they pertain.

The Foundations of Leninism

VI

THE NATIONAL QUESTION

From this theme I take two main questions:

a) the presentation of the question;

b) the liberation movement of the oppressed peoples and the proletarian revolution.
