Dear Maurice and Dan,

We thank you for taking the time out to meet us in Ithaca last November.. We are writing to keep a healthy relationship between us, and we want to be able to continue to communicate with you. We felt that our meeting left some of us uncomfortable, and we know it was difficult for you too. We felt that Dan came down hard on Fay. We don't want to alienate each other, or hurt each others feelings.. We are troubled by the disconnect between what you've said about impeachment and the current administration, and your unwillingness to sign onto HR 799. We understand better now why you can't endorse another candidate while Hillary is still the frontrunner.

We wanted to let you know that we would support you in stepping away from the mainstream, and we weren't sure that came across. . We believe that you very much want the Iraq war to end now. We have seen you as a visionary in your efforts against media consolidation, and you have shown courage in this. We still hope you will reconsider and support the impeachment bill as a means to that end.

We are having a town meeting on December 15, 4-6pm , at Autumn Leaves. Our work continues, and polls now show that over 50% of people support impeachment, both Republican and Democrat. We intend to discuss your Censure Bill, among other things on the agenda.

We are here if you need us. Please let us know if we can be of any help.

Sincerely,

Mealy-mouthed peaceniks edit the crap out of Fay's letter and come up with this.

Deplorable.

Keep me posted, because I am deeply concerened that someone's feelings might be hurt or that they might be made to feel uncomfortable.

Here was my response:

This letter in no way reflects the heart and soul of the original letter. At best it's toothless and mealy-mouthed and at worst it appears to be some sort of make-up note with a dose of deferential treatment tossed in to a guy who bombastically insulted everyone in the room directly or otherwise for an hour and fifteen minutes straight.

In fact I have to say I find the letter deplorable in many ways. What's with the touchy-feely stuff? This isn't some self-help seminar this is An Empire and our so-called Rep is not only violating his sworn oath and the letter of the law, but is supporting one of the most vicious members of The Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton.

Do you (We?) seriously "understand better now why Hinchey can't endorse another candidate", except one who has been complicit in war crimes every step of the way and openly states that She will continue the occupation.

No wonder these Senators and Reps keep shoving it up our collective asses. They must laugh at stuff like this.

What's the point of this letter? Seems only a step removed from apologizing to Hinchey for him heaping abuse upon us.

"We are here if you need us?"

Who wrote this stuff? If it was you Danny get down here right away so I can bring you back to reality with a detailed examination of how consistent has been this "visionary" in his support of Military contracts for Lockheed Martin.

Chlamor, dontcha know you sound like a extreme fringe leftist and all you're gonna accomplish is alienating all these well-meaning politicians, their staff and supporters when what you should be doing is groveling at their feet in the hopes of getting some crumbs of meaningless rhetoric and platitudes thrown at you.

Unfuckingbelievable.

on edit: actually it's totally believable, it's just like this in Ann Arbor. It's just like this almost everyewhere. Maybe it's the whiff of power that makes people dizzy. Cuz you'd think those who make it far enough to get in the office and give them a hard time wouldn't be total wusses when push comes to shove. Whatevs

...the whiff of power that makes people dizzy

Interesting. Very interesting.

I think that you first need to have something to say, and secondly you need to think of yourself as an equal.

I think many people are missing those two things.

I can remember back during the 2006 election campaigns having a lot of conversations with activists that perplexed me. "How do we speak truth to power?" was the question they were asking. My thinking was why not pick up the phone? We had very definite things we wanted to communicate to Stabenow, Granholm and many others, were passionate about what we had to say, very determined, and were convinced that we could do it and would do it and that we were the ones to be doing it. We were in good strong communication with all of the players in the Dem party in Michigan, built rapport with the various aides, and accomplished quite a few things that I have talked about here before, including a big coup - getting Stabenow to kick off her campaign at a meeting of farmers, and I was able to pick the speaker to introduce her and ghost write the speech. And I am a nobody.

Likewise, when I lived in Detroit all those years I was in communication with all of the pols, especially Conyers and also Blanchard, Bonier and many others.

Of course. Why not? If you care and if you have something important to say, why sit back apathetically or meekly accept second class status?

This leads me to believe that there is once again something "suburban-y" going on with the activists, since in both rural areas and urban areas people are hurting, care, are passionate and assume that they have every right and every ability to have an impact. What they don't have is money and status, but more importantly what they don't have is a deep and over-riding commitment to money and status being worshipped.

So the activists don't have anything to say. They think they do, but they don't. They don't have anything to say because they don't have anything to say about the fundamental power imbalances and inequality, and there isn't anything left to talk about if you are going to avoid those.

The activists also cannot see themselves as equals, because they worship at the shrine of status and money and that requires them to be cowed and deferential to those who have those things.

The activists deeply believe in the suburban myth, with its trappings of power and status, the hierarchy and the muddle class, and they can't bring themselves to challenge that. That makes them whimpering little children in the face of the palace guard, or screeching pains-in-the-ass, or rebels without a clue, or else they "play the game" and are co-opted and get nowhere. They can't really talk human being to human being to those they deem their superiors, so they just read scripts and play roles and "speak truth to power" and dress up in pink tiaras.

When you confront the perfume, the expensive suits, the tidy offices with the expensive furnishings, the nice cars, the polished shoes - do you think "oh, my, successful and legitimate people for whom I must have respect" and feel intimidated by all of that? I think most people do. Then, at that point poor people, Black people, and rural people think "fuck them who are they to try to intimidate me" while suburban people think "well gee here are the winners, this I can relate to" because suburbanites believe in that model of "winners" and dutifully take up their place in the pecking order.

Hinchey has sold out totally, word has it from a realiable source that Hillary "offered" him her senate seat if he went with her. And he absolutely fucking refuses to discuss impeachment, precedence be damned.

I'd like to know what she offered Bobby Kennedy Jr., Attorney General??

heres part of my mealy mouthed, overly polite, in fact sickeningly sweet letter to him,

Dear Mr. Kennedy, I've been a huge fan of yours for a long time, and a member of the NRDC. When I heard that you had endorsed Hillary Clinton I was dismayed, disappointed, and truly concerned. It is my understanding Hillary is the recipient of a great deal of oil and other non-green corporate money in her campaign, (as well as some support from Rupert Murdoch) and her voting record of late is negligent; she did not vote on the latest energy bill or farm bill, very likely due to campaigning. Other candidates have not neglected their duties. I realize, Mr. Kennedy, you cannot honorably renege on your endorsement and I would not expect you to; I feel compelled to speak out with what little voice I have, however. I hope you can influence her in the future if, heaven forfend (in my opinion), she goes to the White House.

I maintain my never ending respect and gratitude for all you do. I will make no further comment on this endorsement except to say that it saddens me...

I would have written the rest but someone would have been ordering chianti and I need my liver...

See you from time to time...Merry Christmas!
