ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A bomb targeting an Air Force bus killed at least 12 people in northwestern Pakistan Tuesday, police said. The blast wounded another 15.

The blast -- which left a large crater on the road -- occurred in Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province.

The bomb was placed in a car under a bridge and remotely detonated when the bus drove across the crossing, said Akthar Munir of Peshawar police.

The North West Frontier Province, near the country's border with Afghanistan, is rife with Islamic extremists and has been the site of recent clashes between Pakistani security forces and militants.

In late June, the military launched an offensive in the area -- the biggest push against extremists in the tribal region since the civilian government took power in March. Islamic militants vowed to retaliate against the operation.

The bus was carrying supplies, said Air Force Capt. Tariq Mahmoud. The casualties included both passengers on the bus and civilians on the street, Farzana Khan of AAJ TV told CNN.

CNN's Reza Sayah contributed to this report.
