A military source said that eight villages and towns in al-Yarmouk basin area have been liberated following concentrated operations by Syrian Arab Army units in the far northwestern countryside of Daraa province, which resulted in killing many Daesh (ISIS) terrorists and destroying their hideouts.

The source told SANA on Saturday that army units established control over the villages and towns of Saisoun, al-Awam, Jumla, Ein Hamata, Abu Reqa, Abu Kherj, al-Nafi’a, and Sadd al-Nafi’a.

The source said the army’s operations in these areas left many terrorists dead, adding that the army seized large amounts of weapons and ammo, while engineering units are currently dismantling landmines and IEDs planted by terrorists in the area.

SANA’s correspondent in Daraa said that with these operations, the army is very close to ending terrorist presence in al-Yarmouk basin area and the entirety of Daraa countryside.

Armed groups positioned in Jubata al-Khashab in Quneitra Countryside have handed over new batches of heavy and medium weapons to the Syrian Arab Army according to the agreement reached earlier.

SANA reporter said that over the past 48 hours, an army unit received from the armed groups a tank, a rocket launcher, two armored vehicles, three SUVs vehicles with 14.5 mm machine guns, a silica, a 122 mm cannon, tank and mortar shells, homemade rocket shells and two 14.5 mm machineguns in addition to various ammunition.

Jubata al-Khashab town and its forests in Quneitra northern countryside posed a den for the terrorist organizations, especially Jabhat al-Nusra which receives various types of weapons and advanced equipment from the Israeli enemy.

On July 19, an agreement was reached in Quneitra which stipulates for the evacuation of terrorists who reject the settlement to Idleb, the settlement of status of those who wish to remain and the return of the Syrian Arab Army to its pre-2011 positions.

Sputnik- The Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation has called on the commanders of illegal armed formations to give up provocations and agree to a peaceful settlement of the conflict in areas under their control.

“On the 27th of July, the Russian Air Force detected and destroyed a UAV, launched from the territory under the control of illegal armed formations in the north of the province of Latakia heading towards the Russian air base Hmeymim,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a report, adding that the incident has not resulted in damages or casualties.

The ministry added that “the air target was destroyed by an anti-aircraft missile system [far from] the air base.”

Earlier in July, the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation reported about several drones launched from a militant-controlled area heading toward the Hmeymim base.

A representative of the Hmeymim air base reported that in June, as well as in May and April, UAVs of unknown origin were detected by Russian airspace control units northeast of the air base. All the UAVs were destroyed.

Russian servicemen had been deployed in Syria in the fall of 2015 at the invitation of the Syrian government, which asked for Moscow’s assistance in the fight against terrorism.

In December 2017, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Daesh* had been defeated in Syria. Following the terror group’s destruction, Russian President Putin proclaimed “victory over terrorists” and ordered a partial withdrawal of Russian forces from Syrian soil.

Terrorists carried out illegal excavation work and systematic acts of sabotage in archaeological city of Bosra

28 July، 2018
Damascus, SANA

Terrorist groups carried out systematic acts of destruction and sabotage against artefacts of the Archaeological Museum in Bosra al-Sham city, in addition to conducting illegal excavation works with the aim of discovering archaeological treasures and smuggling them out of Syria.

Head of the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums, Mahmoud Hamoud, said that a team from the Directorate of Antiquities visited Bosra city and inspected the situation of its archaeological sites, pointing that illegal excavation work took place in the Old City causing huge damage to its parts, in addition to the destruction of several archaeological buildings.

He added that the terrorist groups also stole the contents of the Archaeological Museum, indicating to the difficulty of estimating the total artefact content uncovered by those terrorists in different sites of the city.

Hamoud underlined cooperation between the Directorate and Bosra Department of Antiquities in order to document damage and set up plans to rehabilitate terror-affected archaeological buildings after the end of military operations to canvass the city and dismantle landmines and explosive devices planted by terrorists.

He highlighted the importance of Bosra as a major archaeological site, containing ruins from Roman, Byzantine, and Muslim times. Further, a magnificent 2nd-century Roman theatre, temples, churches and mosques are found within its great walls.

Hasaka: US Conducts Another Heliborne Operations to Rescue ISIL Terrorists

TEHRAN (FNA)- The US military forces continue illegal heliborne operations and rescued three ISIL terrorists from the Eastern province of Hasaka near the border with Iraq on Saturday.

The sources said that an American military helicopter, accompanied by several military vehicles of the Washington-backed Kurdish militias, conducted a heliborne operation between the villages of Tal Mashhan and Tal Dowayem in al-Ya’arabiyeh region in Eastern Hasaka near the border with Iraq.

The soruces further said that three ISIL members, including an Iraqi terrorist, were rescued in the US heliborne operation and were transferred to an unknown destination.

Similar operations have been underway on a regular basis in the region in spite of the US’ claims of war on ISIL in Syria.

In May, the US forces conducted four more airborne operations in Southeastern Hasaka to rescue a number of entrapped ISIL terrorists, a move done repeatedly by the American forces to provide back up for the terrorist group in Eastern Syria.

Four American military helicopters conducted four sorties of heliborne operations in the villages of al-Qeirawan, Haresat Sinjar, al-Ta’ef and aAbu Kabra, evacuating a group of ISIL terrorists to an unknown location.

The US military forces are carrying out airborne operation in ISIL-held regions once in a while.

In the same month, Russia’s airbase in Lattakia province, known as Humeimim, complained that Washington supported the ISIL terrorists through the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, as the SDF continues pressures against civilians in Deir Ezzur.

Humeimim announced that it gained field reports disclosing that Washington is indirectly supporting and equipping the ISIL terrorists.

It added that Washington supports the ISIL through its illegally created allies, the SDF forces, who pursued disintegration of Syria.

Meantime, local sources in Deir Ezzur reported that the SDF forces detained tens of civilians in the province, including women, children and the elderly, en route from Damascus to the region and prevented their move to the province.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Around 600,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their homes in the settlements located in Deir ez-Zor province over the past 10 months, the head of Russia’s National Defense Control Center, Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev said Wednesday.

"Infrastructure projects aiming at life normalization in Deir ez-Zor province's settlements that were liberated from militants are being successfully implemented… Around 600,000 residents have returned to the province over the past 10 months," Mizintsev said at a meeting of the inter-agency coordination headquarters of the Russian defense and foreign ministries on the return of refugees to Syria.

Mizintsev also praised the Syrian authorities for their contribution to creating favorable conditions for the refugees' return.

The Deir ez-Zor province's same-name capital has been under the siege of the Daesh* militants since 2014 before the siege was removed in September last year by the government forces. Deir ez-Zor has also been under Daesh offensive from May to June this year.
Last week, the Russian Defense Ministry said that a total of 1.7 million Syrians currently residing in eight countries had expressed their desire to return to their homes, including almost 890,000 refugees in Lebanon, 300,000 in Turkey, and 150,000 in Jordan.

Daesh*, also known as Islamic State/IS/ISIS/ISIL, is a terrorist organization, banned in Russia

Moscow: Daesh numbers increasing in al-Tanaf area where US troops are deployed

2 August، 2018

Moscow, SANA-Russian Defense Ministry affirmed on Thursday that the areas of the US military presence in Tanaf near the Syrian-Iraqi border have witnessed a significant increase in the number of Daesh (ISIS) terrorists.

Chief of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Gen Sergei Rudskoy said in a briefing published by the Russian Defense Ministry that al-Tanaf area, where the US forces are deployed, is witnessing an increase in the number of Daesh terrorists who are attempting to launch attacks on towns in Sweida, Damascus Countryside, Tadmur (Palmyra) east of Homs and Deir Ezzor.

He added that terrorists are using al-Rukban Camp for displaced people near the Syrian-Jordanian border close to the US troops’ deployment as a shelter, warning of the dangerous situation in the Camp where about 60 thousand displaced people suffer difficult living conditions.

Rudskoy called on the US, whose troops are deployed in the al-Tanaf area, to secure humanitarian access to the Camp as soon as possible and facilitate the return of the displaced to their villages and towns and work to close their base in the area.
The operations of the Syrian Arab Army in southern Syria led to the elimination of Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra in Sweida, Daraa and Quneitra. The Syrian army carried out its operations upon a demand by the residents to protect them from the terrorist activities of the two organizations listed on the international terrorism list, according to the Russian military official.

He added that in light of the failure of the US and Jordan to take any steps to stabilize the situation as guarantors of the de-escalation zone in southern Syria, the Syrian army was able to liberate the area, which created suitable conditions for the return of the displaced to their homes in villages and towns currently undergoing demining, reconstruction and rehabilitation of social and economic facilities.

The statement also expressed concern about the escalating situation in the de-escalation zone in Idleb as a result of the terrorists targeting of the sites of the Syrian army and residential areas in Aleppo, Hama and Lattakia.

US Sends More Troops, Equipment for Allied Militias in Northeastern Syria
Posted by INTERNATIONALIST 360° on AUGUST 4, 2018

Image

TEHRAN (FNA)- The US-led coalition forwarded another military convoy to its allied militias in Northeastern Syria amid intensified tensions between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and civilians, a militant-affiliated media outlet reported on Saturday.

The Arabic-language Smart News website affiliated to the militants in Syria reported that a military convoy of the coalition crossed Iraq into Northeastern Syria via Simalka border-crossing.

It further said that the US military convoy, including 150 trucks with military vehicles on board, a number of oil tankers and other military equipment, was sent to regions that are under SDF’s control in the province of Hasaka and Raqqa.

In the meantime, local sources in Hasaka city reported that an SDF commander was killed by unknown assailants in al-Nashwa neighborhood.

The sources further said that tensions between Syrian civilians and the SDF in Hasaka and Raqqa have gone high, adding that residents of the village of al-Hajiyeh Southeast of the town of Qamishli in Northeastern Hasaka engaged in heavy fighting with the SDF on Friday.

In a relevant development last month, a convoy of weapons and military equipment was sent by the US to the SDF in Hasaka of Syria near the borders with Iraq.

Smart News reported in July that a new US military convoy was sent to the SDF in Northeastern Hasaka through Simalka passageway at the Iraqi borders with Syria.

It added that the convoy consisted of 100 trucks which carried military and armored vehicles and concrete blocks as well as oil tankers with kerosene cargos.

The US army had also dispatched military equipment to the Kurdish militias in Hasaka late last month, a media outlet reported as Washington continued all-out support for the group in Northeastern Syria.

The Arabic-language al-Watan daily quoted local sources as saying that the US-led coalition forwarded several personnel carriers and armored vehicles from Iraq to the Kurdish units stationed in Northeastern Hasaka via the Simalka border-crossing.

Analysts say the US intends to disintegrate Syria by means of the Kurdish militias deployed in the Northern and Northeastern parts of the country.

Russia eyes refugee return as centerpiece of next policy move in Syria
Maxim A. Suchkov August 8, 2018

Moscow claims it's making progress in talks with Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey over the return of Syrian refugees; yet getting international organizations and the United States to cooperate on the refugee return and the reconstruction of Syria proves more challenging.

MOSCOW — As Russia has been gradually moving from a military to a comprehensive political campaign on Syria, one of the primary issues on the agenda for Moscow is the return of refugees. The agenda pierces through current Russian engagements with regional states, overtures to foreign governments and outreach to international agencies. The three dimensions reflect Russia’s threefold intent at this point: stabilize Syria; reinforce its own regional profile of a capable actor and a reliable counter-partner; chart out areas of cooperation with the United States and the European Union. Yet the degree of success Moscow has had working along the three paths varies significantly.

Last week, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised progress Moscow made in discussions on the return of refugees with Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon — the region’s three biggest recipients of Syrian refugees.

“I think we’ll see their results in the short term," Lavrov noted.

The Russian Foreign Ministry names a figure of 1.7 million people who are allegedly willing to return to their homes in Syria.

At different levels Moscow stresses cooperability of regional governments with Russia’s efforts toward the refugee return.

“About 890,000 Syrian citizens can return to their home country in the coming months,” said the head of Russia’s National Defense Control Center, Col. Gen. Mikhail Mizintsev, referencing data by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

"Lebanon’s government has established a working group to set up a joint committee on cooperation with Syria in matters concerning the return of refugees. Lebanese regional refugee centers have reported receiving about 10,000 applications from Syrian citizens [seeking] to return to their home country," he added.

Jordan too has been actively facilitating the return of refugees.

"The government of the Hashemite Kingdom has taken a number of steps that have encouraged more than 200,000 Syrian citizens to express a wish to return to their places of permanent residence. All this is happening amid the Syrian army’s successes in regaining control of the country’s border with Jordan," Mizintsev said.

While working with regional states has so far been rather successful, getting international agencies on board with Russian initiatives has proved much more challenging for Moscow.

"We have an interested response [from the Humanitarian Affairs Office] and at the level of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which was outlined by the deputy high commissioner in Sochi at the Astana format meeting on July 30-31. As for other UN agencies, we have a feeling — which we would like to double-check — that they are guided by the West’s stance and wait until this position changes," Lavrov stated.

"So far, we have seen no UN employees in the areas controlled by the government where assistance is needed to restore the destroyed life-support systems. I hope this is a false impression, this could be a mere coincidence," Russia’s top diplomat argued.

Lavrov’s remarks reflect an underlying problem Moscow encounters: getting interested EU and US parties to cooperate on issues they — at least the Europeans — have long claimed they care about.

On Aug. 4, Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed it had proposed cooperation to the US military on Syrian refugees and joint demining efforts in Raqqa. On July 19, shortly after the Helsinki summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, head of Russian military’s General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov used a closely guarded bilateral communications channel to send a letter to US Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The letter from the top Russian general reportedly included Moscow’s proposals to discuss with Damascus safety guarantees for refugees stranded at Rukban, as well as creating conditions for their return home.

The Rukban refugee camp lies within 55 kilometers (34 miles) from the so-called deconfliction zone set up by the United States to provide safety for its troops deployed near the Iraqi-Syrian border. The camp has long been a serious concern for the pro-Assad coalition, with Russia accusing the United States of “setting up a terrorist reserve” in the facility.

A second set of proposals in the letter, according to the Russian military, concerned “coordination of humanitarian demining, including in Raqqa, and other priority humanitarian issues.” The proposal itself is not really new since Moscow has long been advocating cooperation in Raqqa as a starting point for practical cooperation between the two countries and a trust-building measure.

Another point on the proposed agenda in the letter had to do with Syria’s reconstruction in light of lack of fuel, equipment, construction materials and funding. Russia would want the United States to either contribute what’s needed directly or use its power and leverage in getting it from international agencies. The United States, in turn, has long argued the reconstruction should be linked to a process of political transition in Syria and UN-supervised elections.

A source in the Russian Foreign Ministry who was speaking with Al-Monitor not for attribution said the United States and Europeans should recognize their own responsibility for the conflict in Syria.

“When they say, 'You [Russia, Iran and Assad] destroyed the country, now you fix it,' our response is, 'How many Western nations are to blame for the destruction of Syria?' We are prepared to contribute our share, but it’s clear they must contribute theirs,” he argued.

He noted that America’s reluctance to cooperate with Russia on efforts of refugee return plays to the detriment of its own policies in the Middle East.

“We have succeeded in getting many nations on board to work on things that are important to them. When it comes to refugees, security and economy are important drivers for their willingness to cooperate. America is standing there alone discouraging even those Europeans who are genuinely interested in some cooperation with Russia from doing so. It shows how deep the frustration and distrust of us are within their decision-making circles.” he said.

The source added, "Does it create a problem for our initiatives? To some extent, but only in that if the United States agreed to cooperate, it would send a positive impetus to others. But we are set on a path that they [the United States] cannot reverse. We will continue doing what we are doing on our refugee policies and other things. There will be other nations and bodies interested in reconstruction and at the end of the day America will find itself isolated by its own 'reluctance-and-aloofness policy.'"

ISIS given ‘breathing space’ in parts of Syria under US-backed forces' control

Islamic State managed to regain access to Syrian oil fields and make profits from selling oil, a new UN report reveals. While the UN did not point fingers, the IS reemergence seems to occur in areas held by the US-backed forces.

“Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant [IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS], having been defeated militarily in Iraq and most of the Syrian Arab Republic during 2017, rallied in early 2018. This was the result of a loss of momentum by forces fighting it in the east of the Syrian Arab Republic,” the recent report from the UN Security Council’s Sanctions Monitoring Team reads. The document is dated July 27, but was only released to the public this week.

The slow-down gave IS “breathing space to prepare for the next phase of its evolution into a global covert network.” As of June 2018, the terrorist group has been controlling “small pockets of territory in the Syrian Arab Republic on the Iraqi border,” effectively carrying on with its quasi-state ways.

“[IS] was able to extract and sell some oil, and to mount attacks, including across the border into Iraq,” the reports stated, adding that the terrorist group regained “access to some oil fields in northeastern” Syria.

While the report did not specify which forces exactly were having troubles with “momentum,” northeastern Syria is located on the left bank of the Euphrates river, controlled by the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia backed by the US-led coalition.

Regaining control of the oil fields allowed IS to yet again make oil profits a significant source of revenue. The report also vaguely stated that IS continues to impose “taxes” on civilians “in areas it controls, as well as in contested areas,” as well as to kidnap local businessmen for ransom.

Apart from strengthening of IS-held “pockets” in northeastern Syria, the report also listed a number of hotspots in Syria, which might be sources of further IS reemergence. Among them, the UN named the Rukban refugee camp, located near the Al-Tanf US military base. Other IS-infested places listed in the report include unspecified locations in the Aleppo province and an area controlled by an IS-affiliated group in the Deraa province. The latter, however, was already eradicated late in July during the Syrian Army offensive in the south-west of the country.

The issue of the Rukban refugee camp has been repeatedly raised by Moscow and Damascus, who repeatedly urged the US to cooperate. Earlier in August, Colonel General Sergey Rudskoy, the head of operations of the Russian General Staff, described Rukban as place where “people are living in harsh conditions and where terrorists find shelter.”

“Our American partners should provide humanitarian access to Rukban as soon as possible, provide passage for the refugees to their home areas and withdraw the base from Al-Tanf,” Rudskoy stated.

Army fortifies its positions in surroundings of al-Safa hills in Sweida

Image

19 August، 2018

Sweida, SANA- Syrian Arab Army units and the allied forces continued operations against Daesh (ISIS) dens and fortifications in al-Safa hills, the last stronghold for the takfiri terrorist organization in Sweida province’s eastern badiya (desert).

SANA reporter said that army units fortified their positions in the vicinity of al-Safa hills, tightening the noose around the encircled Daesh pockets, responding with the appropriate weapons to any hostile attempt by terrorists to break the siege imposed on them.
