GENERAL STRIKE: We put forward our own needs and not the profits of the few

On November 28th, a 24-hour general strike of the private sector took place in Greece. The strike mobilisation, held by Sectoral Federations, Labour Centers (regional trade unions) and Trade-Unions that responded to the call of the All-workers’ Militant Front (PAME) and demonstrated in Athens and other cities for their needs and not for the profits of the few, was a massive, militant response to the government, employers and the compromised leadership of the General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE), which all this time was trying to prevent the success of the strike.

The GS of the CC of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, attended the strike rally held by Federations – Labour Centers and Trade-Unions in Athens. There, he made the following statement to the reporters: he demanded “the abolition of the anti-labour laws, the restoration of the collective bargaining agreements and of the minimum wage at €751, the abolition of the unacceptable law providing further reductions to pensions.” He demanded “stable and permanent work for all, increases in salary and pensions, abolition of the unacceptable tax-robbery of our people, e.g. the heavy tax of the people’s housing (ENFIA)”. In addition, he called for no entanglement of our country in the dangerous plans of NATO.

On the demonstrations in France

The KKE expresses its solidarity with the mass mobilizations of workers, students, university students and other popular forces in France over the recent weeks, against the policy of excessively high fuel costs and the aggressive taxation of which.

This is just a part of the harsh class anti-popular policies of the "visionary" Macron – close associate of the SYRIZA-ANEL government – that are the latest word in the so-called reforms of the EU that are being implemented all over Europe. It reveals the fact that whoever is the manager of an economy that has serving capital and the criteria of capitalist profit as its strategy will promote harsh anti-worker measures in the name of a "green economy".

The KKE condemns the harsh repression, police terrorism against the protesters, the restriction of trade union action, overall the restriction of popular liberties by the Macron government.

The French people, the people of Europe, are capable today of drawing conclusions. The working class, the people, can in every country, strengthen the anti-capitalist, anti-monopoly orientation of their struggle with their own social alliance, to overcome the maneuvering of the governments, as as well as the forces that attempt to channel popular dissatisfaction into temporary forms of relief, which cause no harm to the capitalist system. To isolate the mechanisms that are hatching the serpent's egg and constitute a base for every type of provocation and slandering of the movement.

The course of regroupment and the emancipation of the labor movement, enhancing of the degree of organization of workers in the labor movement, the strengthening of their class orientation, constitute a guarantee that the voice of the workers and the other popular strata can become stronger and confront every type of distortion and deformed lens of the exploitative system, paving the way for the struggle for power and an economy that will serve the people's interests.

Brutal repression of the mass mobilization of teachers by the government

Image

The SYRIZA-ANEL government responded with brutal repression to the massive and dynamic mobilizations by teachers in the framework of their 24-hour strike on Friday 11/1/19, against the government draft bill for the new appointment system that is being discussed in the Parliament. As the teachers denounce, this bill is a pre-announcement of the dismissal of thousands of substitute teachers, through the criteria adopted in the new recruitment system.

In Athens, when the march reached the official residence of the prime minister, the teachers' representatives demanded the police vans who had blocked access to be removed, in order to meet with the prime minister.

The police responded with an excessive use of chemicals, shooting blindly with stun grenades against the teachers while being behind the police vans, resulting in injuries of protesters. Among them, the KKE MP Yiannis Delis, Thodora Drimala, a member of the Administration Board of the Greek Teachers' Federation and a PAME cadre, and Yiannis Eris, a university student elected in the Administration Board of the faculty of history and archaeology. The KKE MP suffered a burn and an eardrum rupture and is hospitalized at the Evangelismos Hospital.

In an attempt to renounce the government's heavy responsibility for the attack, the Minister of Citizen Protection, Olga Gerovasili, in her statement talked about ... "unacceptable and politically dangerous" actions of "some men of the Riot Police", while the Hellenic Police Headquarters rushed to order an official administrative inquiry ...

The Press Office of the CC of the KKE issued the following announcement on the brutal attack against the teachers' demonstration by the Riot Police: "The KKE condemns the brutal attack against the teachers' mass demonstration outside the Parliament by the Riot Police, that even shoot blindly against the crowd with tear gas and stun grenades. The result of this attack was the injury of protesters, including the KKE MP Yiannis Delis and Thodora Drimala, a member of the Administration Board of the Greek Teachers' Federation and a PAME cadre, who were transferred to Evangelismos Hospital. This attack shows that the SYRIZA-ANEL government has no hesitation in imposing its policy, which in the field of teachers is expressed in the captivation and unemployment of thousands of contract and non-appointed teachers, as well as in the thousands of gaps in schools. "

The KKE parliamentary representative Thanasis Pafilis strongly protested about the event to the Minister of Citizen Protection.

Statement by Dimitris Koutsoumpas
In a statement, the General Secretary of the CC of the KKE Dimitris Koutsoumpas noted:

"Today's brutal attack by police forces against teachers, which resulted in the serious injury of the KKE MP Yiannis Delis, who is being hospitalized, proves that the SYRIZA - ANEL government is ruthless.

In this way, it seems that Mr. Tsipras intends - as all the previous ones did - to "tie up all the loose ends", i.e. to complete the dirty work he has undertaken."

Tearful analyses of the "far-right" and the truth about the role of the "ruling left"
(or 'strain at a gnat and swallow a camel')

Image

Recently in Nicosia, the so-called "Study Days" took place, organized by the "Left" Euro-parliamentary group called European United Left/ Nordic Green Left (GUE / NGL). As is known, the KKE withdrew from this group in 2014 since it is – in essence - the parliamentary "arm" of the opportunist structure of the so-called "Party of the European Left" (PEL). The KKE in Europe coordinates its action with the 30 Communist and Workers' Parties that participate in the "European Communist Initiative".
Returning to the recent event, the "Study Days" of the GUE/NGL, it's worth taking a look at the statement of the Vice-President of the European Parliament and head of the SYRIZA delegation, Dimitris Papadimoulis, who introduced the theme "The far-right in the EU. The response of the Left".

It is of course, brash of the GUE/NGL to organize a discussion "on the struggle against the far-right" and to arrange for the representative of SYRIZA who for 4 years now, co-governs with the far-right party Independent Greeks (ANEL) , to present on this topic.

The causes of the phenomenon and the guilty silence of the "ruling left"

In his intervention, the SYRIZA representative estimated that the cause of the rise of the far-right is found in the "neoliberalism that increased the inequalities" in our society.

To tell the truth, it's interesting to read these lines from the representative of a ruling party that during its 4-year governance implemented all of the harsh anti-popular measures that the previous 'right' and social-democratic governments had managed to load onto the backs of the people, burdening the people with new, additional measures, with the goal of increasing the profits of the large enterprises. This anti-popular policy that was implemented by the 'left' government of SYRIZA as well has led 46.3% of the population to live below the poverty threshold.

Really, how can the 'tears' of SYRIZA regarding the rise in the far-right and fascism correspond with the joint excursions of its parliament members with those of the Nazi "Golden Dawn" to Kastellorizo? How is it that its government invites representatives of Golden Dawn to a series of fiestas and celebratory events? How has the "left" government not taken all the necessary steps in order to end the trial of the dozens of GD leaders that has been running for the last 5 years, where those on trial have been charged with murder and other serious crimes?

Perhaps the vice-president of the European Parliament does not know that the parliament he represents has taken a series of decisions that 'bring grist to the mill" of revising History and the vindication of the Nazis along with those that collaborated with them?

He doesn't know that the very EU which the SYRIZA forces have always supported and which the GUE/NGL forces beautify, cultivating confusion with the myth around the 'correcting' of this imperialist organization, has raised anti-communism to the level of an official ideology, in this way 'putting fresh wind in the sails of" the far-right and fascist forces?

He doesn't know that with the support of the EU in a series of countries the communist parties are banned, or, face huge obstacles that block their political action?
Has he forgotten that one of the very first trips by the President of SYRIZA, A. Tsipras, as Prime Minister, was his visit to Ukraine and his meeting with its President P. Poroshenko who in the period just before had risen to power through a coup against the leadership of the country, supported by fascist forces?

Of course he knows all this! Just as he well knows that every year the GUE-NGL participates in the "celebration" of the anti-communist "Sakharov Prizes" that has been instituted by the Euro Parliament.

Therefore, the hypocrisy of the forces of the so-called "governing left" is great, pretending that they don't know anything about the crime in which they themselves participate, managing capitalism, implementing anti-people policies.

Anti-communism and anti-Sovietism, combined with the revision of History and the vindication of the Nazis, along with the refuting of hopes that were sown by the social-democratic governments (old and new), are factors that "prepare the ground" for the development of nationalist, far-right and fascist forces.

The services provided by SYRIZA to capital and Euro-Atlanticism reinforce nationalism.

Moreover, the aim of the SYRIZA-ANEL government to serve the interests of big capital and its international alliances with the USA, NATO and the EU is what led to the so-called "Prespes Accord". The aim is clear: To promote the integration of FYROM and the Western Balkans as a whole into NATO and EU imperialist associations in order to "crush" the competitive interests of other imperialist powers seeking to strengthen their positions in the Balkans.

The "Prespes Accord" that the SYRIZA government signed to support Euro-Atlantic plans, preserving the seeds of irredentism, strengthens nationalism on both sides of the borders. It proves once again that bourgeois cosmopolitanism of which SYRIZA is a 'master', perfectly suits the forces that cultivate nationalism.

Who constitutes a deterrent?

On this of course, Mr. Papadimoulis didn't say a word in Cyprus. Conversely, he supported that the "antidote" to the strengthening of the far-right is a "united left" that can organize "great progressive alliances".

These "great progressive alliances" are nothing else but the dream of combining new and old social-democratic forces, who, as we stressed, have huge responsibility for the strengthening of the far-right and fascism. Of course these forces that are integrated into the capitalist system, that support the imperialist associations of the EU and NATO, the plans of the USA, cannot in any way contribute to confronting the far-right and fascism. They mislead the working people disguised in the cloak of "anti-fasicsm" and "progressive and anti-fascist fronts".

Brecht wrote that "fascism can only be fought against as capitalism in its rawest and most oppressive form" and it is irrefutably true that fascism is born out of capitalism.

Can it be fought against and beaten?

Only the forces that have clarified that the issue is not the method of management of the system, as is claimed by the new social-democracy of SYRIZA and its allies, but the capitalist system itself.

The Communist and Workers' parties that have created a front against capital, the imperialist forces such as the USA, as well as the imperialist associations of NATO and the EU, and not those of the new social-democracy that actively participates in their designs.

Only the communists that maintain a front against capitalism, the monopolies, the imperialist unions, that wage a battle for the formation of the Social Alliance of the working class with the other popular strata and who will send to the "dustbin" of History the "womb" that gives birth to fascism, the capitalist system.

In relation to the provocative joint statement of the Social-democrats, Greens, GUE/NGL concerning the Nobel Peace Prize for Tsipras-Zaev

The Press Statement of the KKE delegation in the European Parliament on the provocative joint statement of the Social-democrats, Greens, GUE/NGL concerning the Nobel Peace Prize for Tsipras-Zaev makes the following references:

«The joint statement of the heads of the Social-democrats, Greens and so-called Left Group (GUE/NGL) in the European Parliament, Udo Bullmann, Ska Keller and Gabi Zimmer, through which they propose Tsipras and Zaev for the Nobel Peace Prize because they pushed forward the EU-NATO Prespes Agreement is a massive provocation against the people.

In any case, this prize has been given in past for their services in the promotion of imperialist plans to US Presidents and Secretaries of State, such as Kissinger and Obama who pushed forwards every kind of imperialist intervention, bombardments and coups. The prize has also been awarded to Walesa, Gorbachev, known for their dirty role in the counterrevolutions.

The head of GUE/NGL, Zimmer (cadre of the German Die Linke party) in cooperation with the political groups of the "Socialists and Democrats" and "Greens" went as far as recognizing this anti-people agreement as a "historic achievement" that puts FYROM in the camp of the EU and NATO, while it includes the dangerous seeds of irredentism.

But, however much the forces of old and new social-democracy attempt to place the halo of "peace and progress" on NATO, the USA, the EU, their efforts are in vain..because their longstanding crimes, the slaughter of the peoples, dictatorships, wars, their open imperialist interventions for the interests of the monopolies are indelibly engraved in the memory and consciousness of the people.

As for the stance of GUE/NGL, it does not surprise us. It is an apologist for the EU that undertakes the job of prettifying it. It supports its anti-people governments, such as that of SYRIZA of the memoranda and the whitewashing of US imperialism in Greece, the governments of Spain and Portugal, legitimizing capitalist exploitation.

The peoples have a lot of experience and can reject the false dilemma between progress and the far right which is another reactionary tool of the system.

A progressive policy is what serves the just cause of the working class, the class struggle. Because this is the motor force of social development, the struggle for the overthrow of capitalist power as a precondition for disengagement from the EU, with the people holding the reins of power.

The real dilemma in the impending European Elections from the standpoint of the people and their interests is the following: will we continue along the same path, which demonstrably brings new problems and torments or will we counterattack in a mass and combative way everywhere, so that this rotten exploitative system is overthrown?"

Postscript:
The reactions around this unacceptable act have led some into concocting new unbelievable fairytales. So, in an attempt to exonerate GUE/NGL and its President, some claimed that G. Zimmer signed the joint statement supporting the candidacy of Tsipras and Zaev for the Nobel Prize privately as ... an individual.

The only thing they achieve with this claim is to expose themselves even more. And this is because the specific statement is cosigned by U. Bullman-President of the Political Group of the Socialist and Democrats, S. Kelller-President of the Political Group of the Greens and G. Zimmer-President of GUE/NGL.

So can the claim that the latter signed as an individual really have any credibility? Or maybe the leaders of the political forces of the European Parliament can sign as leaders some hours of the day and at other hours sign as "individuals"?

The questions are rhetorical, because we know very well that the hypocrisy of opportunism has no boundaries and can without blushing "baptize meat as fish".

A Forgotten Anniversary

In contrast to four years ago, the anniversary of the electoral victory of the Greek political party, SYRIZA, passed almost unnoticed by the US and international left. Thanks to a posting by Nikos Mottas, we are reminded of that once celebrated event.

Apparently, it is easy to forget the euphoria of the great majority of the reformist and anti-capitalist international left accompanying SYRIZA’s success in the Greek elections, promising to overturn the regimen of austerity that brought Greece to its knees. It must be easy to forget the ascent of the youthful, charismatic, and photogenic SYRIZA leader, Alexis Tsipras, who charmed everyone from The New York Times liberal Paul Krugman to even some in the Communist movement.

I remember well the disdain cast on those who defended the decision by the Greek Communists (KKE) to refuse partnership in the SYRIZA government. Left pundits pointed to KKE rejection of collaboration as another example of Communist “sectarianism.” The KKE was vilified for refusing to legitimize a social democratic electoral victory that would both fail to rescue Greek workers and betray the cause of socialism.

In the words of Motta in his In Defense of Communism article:

From the very beginning of SYRIZA's electoral rise, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) was the only political power which, actually and honestly, exposed the real nature of Alexis Tsipras' party. Back in 2012, various leftist and reformist forces in Greece, including SYRIZA, exercised immense pressure to the KKE, in an effort to extort its collaboration with a future “left government.” Both bourgeois and opportunist media attacked the KKE for its refusal to join a “left” political alliance under SYRIZA.

Looking back, the four years of SYRIZA were a disaster for the Greek people. As the Mottas quote below reminds us, SYRIZA and its right-wing populist allies brought:

Full implementation of all the anti-people, anti-worker measures of the previous austerity memorandums (2010-2014) signed by the governments of PASOK [social democrats] and ND [conservatives], which include immense cuts in salaries and destruction of labour rights.

Unprecedented tax enforcement against the working class and popular strata, including increase in VAT [value-added tax] and dozens of increases in “special” taxes. At the same time, numerous tax evasion laws in favor of the big capital remained intact.

Cuts in pensions and retirement age limits, decrease of lump-sum allowances, while through the so-called “Katrougalos law” a whole category of insurance contributions was imposed.

The tax enforcement on one hand and the continuous reductions in pensions and social benefits on the other, led to monstrous primary surpluses. These surpluses in state budget have been a result of extreme austerity imposed on the working people. From the budget's 55 billion euros, only 800 million euros are being used by the government as part of a supposed “social policy.”

Implementation of every project that benefits the big capital, from the destructive gold mining in Chalkidiki and the conversion of Attica into a field of profit-making large businesses (casinos, Elliniko redevelopment, etc) to the privatization of the country's airports, major ports (e.g. Piraeus, Thessaloniki), of the Public Power Corporation (DEI), etc.
In addition, the SYRIZA-ANEL coalition collaborated closely with US-NATO imperialist ventures, including in Syria. Instead of offering an escape from the austere, repressive, capital-friendly policies of PASOK and New Democracy, SYRIZA-ANEL entrenched, even expanded those policies. In short, SYRIZA betrayed the Greek people who supported politicians proving to be sell-outs rather than liberators. For those in the international center-left and left who invested heavily in what they believed to be a rebirth of progressive militancy, SYRIZA proved to be an embarrassment.
Lessons Learned?

For Mottos, the lesson of SYRIZA is transparent:

The four years of SYRIZA governance has destroyed any illusions. The perception that a bourgeois government can exercise a pro-people, pro-workers policy within the limits of the capitalist system has been totally bankrupted. A major lesson that comes out of the SYRIZA experience is that the rotten exploitative system cannot be managed or reformed in favor of the workers' interests.

And yet much of the left-- both the “respectable” and the radical left-- continues to cling to the hope that a reformist political formation can steer the capitalist ship in a more humane, more just direction. Many still believe that the institutions so thoroughly and solidly constructed by capital to promote its interests can be used to serve working people.

Certainly some worthy, but contingent concessions have been won against capital in moments of severe stress on the system-- wars, economic crisis, mass upheaval-- but they were made only to shield the capitalist system from even more drastic outcomes: revolution or breakdown. It is precisely in those moments that the Leninist left sees the opportunity to advance beyond capitalist reforms and overthrow capitalism.

And that underscores the difference between Communists and revolutionary socialists and their social democratic rivals: Communists never surrender their maximum program of overturning capitalism while consistently supporting any and all reforms that challenge capital’s authority or erode its economic dominance. The most radical Social Democrats, on the other hand, see reforms and the fight for reforms as intrinsic, incremental steps on the road to socialism. Consequently, they are prepared to compromise with, to accommodate capital in order to secure even minimal steps toward reforms-- collecting the crumbs does not make a cake!

For example, despite popular disgust with the profit-anchored US healthcare system, Democratic leaders, time after time, dilute healthcare legislation to appease capital and avoid political struggle. It is painful to watch them retreat before the battle is joined. They refuse to fight for what is necessary, instead settling for what they believe is possible.

In countries like the UK or the US, where social democracy is experiencing a rebirth in parties that have for decades mutated into capitalist instruments, into corporate clients, Communists can be the most principled fighters against the predictable ruling class assault mounted against these leftward trends. At the same time, they cannot get caught in the trap of legitimizing social democratic ideology, of endorsing the social democratic ‘road’ to socialism.

The rise of so-called ‘Democratic Socialism’ in the US-- personified by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez-- signals the profound political crisis of the US two-party system. And the success of Trump was as much a failure of the corporate-dominated, market fundamentalist Democratic Party to address that crisis.

But the renegade social democratic trend emerging in the Democratic Party is likely more a face lift than a new soul. There is little reason to believe that the Democratic Party leadership will allow real change beyond rousing its liberal-minded base. Pelosi, Schumer, and the rest are charged with and determined to arrest or compromise that trend as illustrated by their dismissal of the “Green New Deal.”

Nonetheless, the popular rise of soft-left alternatives marks a welcome trend, possibly foretelling opportunity for even more leftward options. Ocasio-Cortez frequently punctures the smug facade of the corporate-dominated political establishment; Ilhan Omar has challenged the unrestrained political bullying of AIPAC; and Tulsi Gabbard has boldly critiqued the imperial foreign policy consensus. But all three have been hammered swiftly by the media and their party’s mainstream. What conclusion can be drawn about the prospects for reforming the Democratic Party? For pursuing these goals within the Democratic Party?

The history of the post-World War II era demonstrates the bankruptcy of the social democracy that Motta references. Social democracy has taken the working class no closer to socialism. The reforms won have as quickly been eroded. Since 1980, North Atlantic social democracy has shamefully devolved into conservative-lite, embracing an emaciated state, the rule of the market, a minimal safety net, and ruthless competition. In Europe, social democracy has collapsed-- rejected by the people or betrayed by its leadership-- with the last ruling Party (Spain’s socialists) hanging onto power by a slender thread.

As Motto does, we should draw lessons from this collapse and not pray for the social democratic resurrection as do influential thinkers like Thomas Piketty, Yanis Varoufakis, and their ilk.

With the collapse of social democracy and the ugly rise of bogus populist nationalism, the only credible road of promise for the working class is revolutionary socialism.

The struggle against the trade union mafia is a matter for every worker!

Federations and trade unions with their major demonstration outside the offices of GSEE on 28/3/19 confirmed that they will continue the fight to rid the workers' organizations of the intervention of the employers, of the degenerate practices of the trade union bureaucrats that create a false correlation of forces in order to keep the trade unions tied to the employers.

The workers clearly demanded for there to be a Congress of GSEE, a real workers' congress, without illegitimate delegates and employers. Trade unions of workers, not of the employers!

In the face of the machinations of the trade union leadership of GSEE, the workers have every right to struggle with every means at their disposal to rid the workers' organizations of the intervention of the employers and the state, of the degenerate practices of the trade union bureaucrats.

The information that the majority in GSEE are preparing a Congress in a resort on the island of Rhodes provoked anger.

The workers sent a message that wherever it takes place, they will make their presence felt.

A tough fight for the workers to control the trade unions

In the recent period in Greece, a fierce battle is being waged by sectoral federations, labour centres, trade unions and trade unionists that have responded to the call of the All-workers’ Militant Front (PAME) against the plans of the trade union mafia which controls the General Confederation of Greek Workers(GSEE).

GSEE, which was founded 100 years ago with the historic contribution of communists and is the confederation of workers in the country’s private sector has been controlled for years now by the mafia-like machinations of the trade union groupings of PASKE (aligned to the social-democratic party of PASOK), DAKE (which is aligned to the right-wing party ND) and the Vasilopoulos group (aligned to the governmental social-democratic party of SYRIZA).

The aim of these forces was to hold this year as well a “Congress”-parody with fake “delegates”, who are also employers, on 14-17 of March. For this reason they chose to hold the Congress in a tourist resort, in the city of Kalamata in a luxurious hotel chosen by this trade union mafia and paid for by the workers. As PAME revealed, a significant number of delegates, at least 53, should not have taken part in the Congress, due to illegitimate and irregular procedures.

However, their plans were ruined by sectoral federations, labour centres, trade unions and trade unionists and workers who responded to the call of PAME with mass mobilizations outside the hotel for 3 days. They fought tirelessly to block these plans, with slogans such as “Trade unions of the workers, not of the employers”. Dozens of congress delegates elected from class oriented trade unions that rally in PAME were present at the protests. It should be noted that at the previous congress of GSEE, DAS the trade union grouping supported by the class-oriented trade unions received the second highest number of votes (22% of the delegates) and gained 10 representatives on the 45 member National Board of GSEE.

Then the trade union mafia, as their plans had failed, sought help from the bourgeois state, the forces of repression and the bourgeois parties. In the relevant letters that it sent to all the parties that supported the anti-worker measures of recent years, the leadership of GSEE requested “ an immediate meeting with you to protect the democratic institutions and to safeguard the unimpeded application of fundamental democratic rights.”

On 21/3 the trade union mafia of the leadership of GSEE met with the Deputy Minister for the Citizen Protection, of the SYRIZA government, Katerina Papakosta (who it should be noted used to be an MP of the right-wing ND party) and discussed “the issue of taking security measures in order to protect future meetings of GSEE” according to the press statement of the Deputy Minister.

In these conditions, trade union organizations are calling on the workers to attend a mass demonstration on the Pedio Areos in front of the offices of GSEE on Thursday 28/3, 6.00 pm, As the call of trade unions stresses: “ the mass participation in Thursday’s demonstration will express the decision of the workers to continue their struggle against the decay manifested by those who present themselves as “representatives of the working class” and who in their offices every day plan the disarming of the struggles, the neutralization of the trade unions so that their friends, the employers can be free to make more profit, smashing the rights of the workers (...)”

The trade unions that are organizing the demonstration emphasis that: “ We denounce the trade union mafia of the majority of GSEE that is excelling itself in terms of mafia-like machinations and activities, with the aim of imposing the wishes of the employers, with illegitimate delegates and hired thugs inside the trade unions and their functioning. Trade unions of the workers, not of the employers!”

CP of Greece, ALL-WORKERS MILITANT FRONT (PAME) – 20 YEARS SINCE ITS FOUNDING
4/4/19 3:24 PM

A significant gain in the struggle for the interests of the workers

On the 3rd of April 2019, the workers of Athens, as well as trade unionists from all over the world, honoured the militant 20th anniversary of the founding of the All-workers Militant Front (PAME) with their mass participation in the event which took place in Kaisariani.

Giorgos Perros, head of the Executive Secretariat of PAME, made the central speech, while messages of greetings were delivered by trade unionists from other countries, members of the Presidential Council of the WFTU.

G. Perros noted amongst other things that "the basic legacy of the PAME's activity is the highlighting of the two lines in the trade union movement. The highlighting of the need for militant, mass, workers' trade unions. Trade unions that will fight for the rights of the workers against the employers and their mechanisms inside the trade union movement. Trade unions that will struggle so that the peoples live without poverty, unemployment and wars." The cadre of PAME, in reference to the efforts of the majority of the General Federation of Greek Workers (GSEE), where the forces of PAME are in the 2nd position, to organize an illegitimate congress, with fake delegates, delegates who are not workers, but businessmen, stressed «The confrontation that is being waged and is escalating in this period against the trade union mafia is a precondition for the regroupment of the labour-trade union movement", adding that "the regroupment of the labour is not just a slogan for us. Regroupment of the movement, without affecting the dominance and the interests of the monopoly groups, without disputing the strategy of the EU, without fighting against the anti-people policies, the employers and their mechanisms, without overturning the correlation of forces in the trade unions cannot exist."

It should already be noted that PAME already overturned the mafia machinations for an illegitimate congress in a tourist resort in the city of Kalamata, while from yesterday hundreds of trade unionists of PAME are in the tourist resort of Rhodes in order to prevent the plans of the leadership of GSEE to organize the illegitimate congress there.

In a period when the decay of employer and government led trade unionism is increasing, PAME, with its positions, initiatives and activity, seeks to prioritize as the main factor class rallying and the unity of the working class.

A large delegation of the CC of the KKE, headed by its General Secretary, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, attended the 20th anniversary event of PAME. In addition the mayors of Kaisariani, Ilias Stamelos, and Petroupoli, Vangelis Simos, attended. Delegations from OGE (Federation of Greek Women), PASEVE (Militant Rally of Self-employed) and MAS (Students Front of Struggle), who had met with PAME in the struggles against the anti-people political line and its consequences, were also present. Messages of greetings were delivered by the representatives of trade unions from Cyprus, Cuba, Syria and South Africa.

CP of Greece, KKE on the elections for the European Parliament

5/22/19 3:25 PM
Greece, Communist Party of Greece Ar En Es Ru Europe Communist and workers' parties
C. Lefteris Nikolaou, candidate MEP of the KKE and member of the International Relations Section of the CC is responding to the ICP questions.

1)In Greece, this year May 26 is marked by a "triple election:" the European elections and the elections for regional and local authorities. It is known that the elections for the EP remain generally far from mobilizing people, and consequently, levels of participation remain considerably low. The KKE, even as a party represented in the EP, has always strictly opposed illusions about the character of the EU, which is an imperialist centre that serves the interests of European monopolies. What is the importance of the European elections for the KKE?

Answer: The bourgeois political system each time takes its measures, reconfigures itself, to ease the manipulation of the workers and to present new obstacles in the effort of the Communist Party of Greece. It is not holding the European Elections along with the local ones for reasons of “saving off” public financial resources. However, the KKE today stresses that our people has tried every “solution” that lies inside the walls of the EU and of the capitalist mode of development. The social-democrat administration – of the old and new social-democracy of SYRIZA, as well as all kinds of “new-liberal”, “conservative”, “euroscepticist” recipes all serve the system of capitalist exploitation and the dictatorship of the monopolies. That is why altogether the supporters of this system have taken and continue taking harsh measures against the peoples, that lead to big monopoly groups amassing more profits at the expense of our rights.

The workers that understand the dead-ends that the capitalist system is creating for their life, today have a choice: to support the proposal of the KKE for disengagement from the EU, with the power in the hands of the people, independently if they totally agree with us. In front of us we have a great responsibility: to prove that an important part of the working class, of the rest of the popular strata, and of their youth, does not accept the EU one-way, condemns the reactionary union of the monopolies, the rotten exploitative system that this union supports. To show to the workers of all the countries that the struggle to disentangle from the EU, with the power and the economy in the hands of the workers, for Greece for Europe of Socialism is getting stronger, is getting fortified.

The KKE is participating in the elections for the European Parliament, as you underlined, shedding light on the imperialist character of the EU, that cannot change. Exactly as we participate in the national elections, telling to the workers to not have illusions that through this bourgeois parliament capitalism can be “humanized”. We take part in these elections for the European parliament presenting to the people our complete proposal: for the need to strengthen the struggle of the working class, to form a social alliance with the rest of the popular strata, that will fight for each popular interest, fighting against capitalism and the monopolies. This is a perspective that needs a strong Communist Party of Greece, in the workers movement, in the workplaces, in the daily struggle in the streets and using each spot that we can win in local councils, in the national and European parliaments. We believe that further strengthening of the KKE will send a message of optimism and will be a step ahead for the enhancement of the struggle for the regroupment of the European and international communist movement in a revolutionary direction.

2) Contradictions within imperialists seem to arise. Europe is one of the main centers of the inter-imperialist rivalry. Do you think that these contradictions attribute further importance to the European elections of 2019?

Answer: The EU is concerned, both because unequal development in the EU is strengthening, its internal contradictions, particularly between the stronger capitalist classes in its interior, as well as because of its inter-imperialist competitions with the USA, Russia, China, and others.

It is the two sides of the inter-imperialist competitions: On one hand we have the constant struggle between the capitalist classes that constitute this “wolf-alliance”, that can lead Britain to leave the EU, but also other processes that appear in the interior of the EU under the mantle of “euroscepticism”. “Euroscepticism” is a bourgeois political current that frequently intertwines with nationalist, racist, even fascist forces and views. Such forces put forward protectionism as a choice for sections of the bourgeois class in states of the EU to defend against the worsening of the terms of competitiveness primarily of their industrial capital, particularly in conditions of deceleration of the international capitalist economy.

At the same time, the dominant line in the EU – the line of the German capitalist class – moves between the maintaining of the intergovernmental character of the EU decisions and the application in practice of an EU of “varied speeds”, of many “con-central circles”, applying strict rules in fiscal policy.

Simultaneously, the inter-imperialist contradictions with the USA, Russia, China and other forces for natural resources, energy and commodity routes, market shares are getting more acute and the EU, on these grounds, seeks the enhancement of its militarization.

Of course, the relations and competitions in the interior of the EU and with other forces will be affected by a series of political developments, not only by the elections for the European Parliament, that has concrete responsibilities, but also by the internal political and economical processes in each EU country.

For the communists the issue is to actively fight so that the defiance expressed against the EU (for example, 74% of the Greeks have a negative opinion regarding the EU), is not trapped in solutions that will not affect the system, such as “euroscepticism”, but to be transformed into a powerful current aiming at the disengagement from the EU and NATO, with power and the economy in the hands of the workers, in order to build an economy and society based on our own needs, and not for the capital’s profits.

3)Regarding the discussions about the EU, the KKE rejects at the same time two political tendencies called cosmopolitanism and euroscepticism. What is the position of the KKE on the question of EU? In what terms do you propagate it among masses?

Answer: The KKE sees the EU for what it really is: a reactionary imperialist union of European bourgeois states, aiming at serving the profits of the big European monopoly groups, in their clash with their competitors from the USA, China, Russia, India. Its reactionary character oozes out from every pore. This is proven by the measures that are taken in all countries aiming at intensifying exploitation, flexible working relations; crushing the right to strike; tearing down the rights in education-health-care that have been achieved with hard battles. More than 110 millions live around or below the poverty line, more than 16 million are unemployed, while unfathomable riches are amassed in the hands of the parasites of the bourgeois class, and dozens of billions of Euros are wasted each year for military interventions and spending, in collaboration with the imperialist organization of NATO.

EU’s anticommunism and anti-people hatred cannot be hidden, even from its relevant declarations; declarations co-signed by old and new social-democrats, new-liberals, extreme-right leaders of the EU, as it happened recently on the 9th of May – the day that the peoples of Europe headed by the Communists and the Red Army crushed Nazi-fascism.

Contrary to the forces that speak for a vague exit from the EU, or only from the Euro, the KKE speaks for disengagement from the EU, from NATO and every other imperialist union, with power in the hands of the working class and the people. The way-out for the working class and the popular strata cannot be a capitalist Greece with drachma, inside or even outside of the EU. Such a “solution” cannot lead to the improvement of the people’s life, since the inexorable laws of capitalist exploitation will continue to rule.

The KKE is not “slicing” its strategy for socialism-communism into “pieces” and stages. We believe that the demand to disentangle from the imperialist unions of the EU and of NATO is an integral part with the struggle against the monopolies, that their interests guide the principles of functioning and of configuration of the EU, and against capitalism, that in its imperialist stage, creates such unions, such as the EU and NATO.

Today, the communists in Greece struggle inside the working class and popular movement against anti-peoples measures and decisions of the EU and of the bourgeois governments, such as the abolishment of the historical achievements, of 8 hours of work daily, of public free health-care, education, against the cut-down of the worker’s income for the increase of the profitability of the capital, or against the destructive consequences of the “Common Agricultural Policy” for the poor and medium-sized farmers that are led to extinction in favor of the concentration of agricultural production in the hands of big monopolies. The communists lead the struggles, the strikes, the demonstrations of the youth, the take-overs of national roads by the farmers. We prove to the people the negative consequences of the country’s participation in the imperialist plans and organizations and in the same time we uncover that only the working-class and popular movement that aims against the real enemy can express the real interests of the workers, to not be trapped in bourgeois management and to utilize in its own favor the contradictions between capitalist classes and imperialist centers, that are becoming more acute in this period, and to open up the road towards Greece and Europe of Socialism. That is why only the line that the KKE is proposing, that incorporates the goal of the disengagement, as an integral element of the wider struggle for the overthrow of the capital’s power, can guarantee continuity, duration and victorious perspective for the people’s movement.

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) calls for the closure of all US and NATO bases in response to threats to IranThe Communist Party of Greece (KKE) calls for the closure of all US and NATO bases in response to threats to Iran Share

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has stated that the US plans against Iran will not bring any good to the nations of the region and have urged to close all US and NATO bases in Greece.

"The latest attacks on oil tankers in the Bay of Oman once again turn the developments around Iran: the United States as if they were ready, put Iran in the crosshairs and gather more military forces in the region ... The exacerbation of the situation around Iran does not bode well for the people ... Close now all foreign bases of the United States and NATO in Greece, with the withdrawal of all Greek military forces participating in the NATO and EU missions, "he said the party in its declaration.

According to the KKE, US aggression against Iran has increased after Washington introduced an embargo on Iranian oil exports. Furthermore, the uncertainty surrounding Tehran's nuclear program caused by Israeli threats to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities is only adding fuel to the fire, the party points out.

The KKE has also accused other Greek parties such as Syriza, New Democracy and Movement for Change, which support strategic cooperation with Washington, to create risks for Greece.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have degenerated after two oil tankers, Front Altair and Kokuka Courageous, were attacked on Thursday near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.

While the circumstances of the incident were not clarified, US President Donald Trump directly accused Iran of the incident.

Commenting on the oil tanker incident just before Friday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the United States is acting to undermine stability in the Middle East and the world. According to Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, a senior foreign policy adviser to the Iranian parliament, the US security services and the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad could be behind the recent destabilization in the Gulf region.

STATEMENT OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF THE KKE ON THE RESULTS OF THE PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS OF 7 JULY 2019

Image

1. The CC greets the thousands of members of the Party and KNE, Party supporters, cooperators, and voters, who all contributed to the electoral battle waged by the KKE.

We especially greet those who took this step for the first time, the young men and women who gave their first vote to our Party.

We militantly greet all those who supported the KKE in this electoral battle, continuing an similar cooperation that existed during the European Parliament elections.

This cooperation has its own dynamic, one that is not exhausted by candidacies, neither is it measured only by the ballot box. It expresses processes that can be multiplied within the labor and popular movement, in the struggles that must be developed, against the anti-people policies that will be continued by the newly-elected government of New Democracy.

The next day must find new forces on the path of counter-attack, on the path of class policies and mass struggle, the regroupment of the labor movement, the promotion of an anti-capitalist, anti-monopoly social alliance and the drawing of women and youth into the movement.

The strengthening of the political influence of the KKE in working class neighborhoods,in industrial areas of urban centers, shows that the only path to strengthen the KKE in the class struggle and in the parliament is work inside the factories, the department stores, the streets with small shops, in working class neighborhoods, in the health sector, in education, especially in places where youth are concentrated, when different individual movements and actions unite at the national level with common demands and a direction of challenging the system.

2. The conditions of the Parliamentary election, just as with the European Parliament elections a month ago, reflected the new correlation between the bourgeois parties, with the main feature being the governmental alternation between the two biggest parties of capital, the monopolies, the EU and NATO.

This governmental alternation takes place within the context of the ruling class's more general aims and demands for a more planned intervention, with the goal of safeguarding the governance system with greater stability and efficiency in the face of potential future risks stemming from the anemic capitalist economic recovery and the sharpened imperialist rivalries that are raging in our region and elsewhere.

The electoral results recorded to some extent a justifiable popular dissatisfaction with the SYRIZA government that had continued the anti-people program of the ND and PASOK governments.

However, it is negative that some people, because of SYRIZA policies, turned toward older previously tried anti-people choices. SYRIZA, implementing “right-wing” anti-popular policies with “left-wing” phraseology brought about greater confusion concerning what is “right-conservative” and what is “left-progressive.” It allowed ND and PASOK to appear justified, to cynically project their anti-people program, the need for a swifter promotion of anti-people restructuring.

ND took advantage of SYRIZA's anti-people policies and the dissatisfaction it caused in order to return to governmental management with a vengeance. SYRIZA served the capitalist system, the EU, NATO in the best possible way, with the result that to a certain degree it destroyed its “left” mask, the image that it wants to give to itself as the continuation of the National Resistance of EAM. At the same time, it attempted and is attempting to renew its forces by drawing from from the space of social democracy and the so-called center-left, appearing as the continuation of E. Benizelos, A. Papandreou, and others. This is the meaning of “reforming SYRIZA”, vying for the PASOK space and recently that of MERA25. The supposed transformation of SYRIZA only leads to the greater reinforcement of the very same anti-people political system.

SYRIZA just as PASOK in the past, tries to 'dress' barbaric anti-people policies with the mantle of “progress” and a “progressive alliance, ultimately denigrating the values of real progress, fueling reactionary reflexes both with it own policies, but also with the negation of hopes from significant sections of the people.

A part of popular dissatisfaction was directed at other forces that were supported and prepared to play the role of either an embankment to genuine popular radicalism or a complement to anti-people government management for the benefit of the capitalists, taking the place of previous ones, such as the Potami, the Enosi Kentron, ANEL and others. At the same time, SYRIZA continues to entrap labor-and popular forces with the logic of a seemingly more "painless capitalist management", "correction of the EU", and "necessary" participation in NATO.

3. The class correlation of forces remains very negative, not only in Greece but also in Europe as a whole. In our region, the trade union and popular movement has not gone into a dynamic phase of mass counter-attack yet.

The fact that the bourgeois parties can delude the vast popular majority, creates further difficulties in the the labor – popular struggle. The electoral results reflected an overall trend of retreat to conservatism, seeking solutions from a supposedly better management of the capitalist system. Within broad sections of the people the trend of reduced demands, defeatism, and fatalism predominates. However, many working people choose the basic bourgeois parties with a heavy heart, without enthusiasm, and more importantly, without hope that something can change for the better in their lives, maintaining the faint hope that “things won't get worse”.

Today, these working people have a more positive stance towards the KKE, monitoring its positions and seriously thinking about them, even though they still haven't been convinced to take a more decisive step. The KKE's positions attracted interest and positive consideration, independently of whether people chose KKE at the ballot box, or not.

All of this is a very serious reserve for the people, but also a responsibility for the KKE, to be a powerful springboard for militant rallying within the ranks of the labor – popular movement. The KKE has faith in the working class, that it will dash the hopes of the bourgeois class and its parties who aim for it to continue to be manipulated and hesitant for a long time period, but finally the working class will become the key factor for the change in the correlation of forces in the movement and at the political level with the goal of power.

4. The KKE will utilize the power of its 300,000 voters and the 5.3% of the vote it was handed by the Greek people, with its 15 elected parliament members, in order to serve the peoples interests. It will be the consistent and militant support of the working people in order to strengthen the labor and popular movement in the counter-attack against the anti-people governmental policies that will be continued, but also against the pseudo-opposition of the other bourgeois parties.

Positive is the increase in votes in the Attica Region, both in relation to the May 2019 European Parliament elections and the parliamentary elections of September 2015, based also on the particular importance that Attica has for the rest of the country.

The percentage for the KKE was achieved under conditions of polarization, blackmailing dilemmas, disappointment, abstention, reduced demands that are cultivated, not only by ND but also by other bourgeois and opportunist forces that present themselves as “left” or as “philosophical”, while the intervention of big business and its allies was intense, witnessed by the pressure that it placed to strengthen ND and SYRIZA, along with the obstacles which among others was the fact that thousands of working people work far away from the place where they exercise their voting rights.

The KKE's percentage was achieved with the hard work of thousands of members and friends of the KKE and other people that joined in common cause during all of the previous period in the movement and in the different electoral battles. It was achieved by presenting to the Greek people the real dilemma of the elections, that is how much power it will give to the KKE who the next day will be on the side of resistance against the anti-people attack, leading the counter-attack for contemporary labor popular needs. Because the strength of the KKE expresses the only people-friendly way-out, the struggle for the people to become the owners of the wealth that its produces, for workers' power, for socialism.

Since 2012 when the current of delusion intensified, believing that SYRIZA would provide people-friendly solutions within the framework of the EU and capitalist barbarism, the KKE highlighted the danger: when people's aspirations are refuted, giving way to fatalism and defeatism it ultimately leads to people distancing themselves from the labor popular movement.

A vote for the KKE even when it expresses a partial or a temporary choice, has elements of a clash with the status-quo, emancipation from conservative politics. Especially for young people, since it is a vote that demands a knowledge of the history of the revolutionary labor movement, under conditions of a worldwide negative correlation of forces and retreat, strengthening of anti-communism that is carried out in a myriad of ways, with the goal of subjugating the consciousness of the youth and the working people to the rotten and corrupt system. The electoral strength of the KKE is always shaped by the class struggle, at its peak or at a slump. And, under these circumstances, the stability and the influence of the KKE has particular importance. In any case, it has been confirmed that the development of class consciousness does not come automatically, through relative or absolute impoverishment, intensity of exploitation, aggravation of the immediate problems of the people; if action around all of these problems is not part of the development of an ideological and political struggle, not only against one or the other government, one or the other political figure, but overall against the capitalist system itself.

We do not overlook the fact that taking credit for and yet, also slandering by SYRIZA of communist and the Resistance Movement (EAM) values, more widely of the struggles of the popular movement in Greece and internationally, demobilized left radical people and negatively affected the labor-popular movement, while, in a previous period when the capitalist economic crisis was at its peak, it defamed the organized trade union movement. Much negative experience has been gathered from this, a fact that the labor movement can utilize today to shield its struggles from forms of action that in the end undermine its organized class character. Under the ND government, we won't be surprised if the efforts of SYRIZA and the opportunist space for an “anti-right rallying” is repeated, with an attack on the Party being its strategic goal.

5. The KKE has proven that it extends it hand to all those who want to walk the path of class truth, of justice, of defense of the ideas and the values of socialism – communism, anti-capitalist overthrow, anti-imperialist – anti-war struggle.

Militant women and men took part in the ballots, in the struggles where the KKE led the way, when the other parties demanded that the people abstain from the movement so that they can be manipulated, terrorized, deluded. People that had been in different political spaces even up until yesterday were with the KKE.

The KKE will continue in this direction, within the daily struggles, in the battles we have in front of us, in an effort to increase the spots of resistance and counter-attack, rooted in every workplace, for the strength of the Party to broaden with young militant women and men, to develop the social alliance of salaried workers, of self-employed, farmers and small shop owners, artists, people from the fields of education, health, culture and athletics, to embrace more widely the women and the youth.

We will strive with all means available for the political proposal of the KKE that answers to the impasse of the capitalist mode of production, which is objectively a beacon of resistance and hope for a new socialist – communist society, to “stimulate” the interest and to win the hearts and the consciousnesses of more working people and youth.

6. It is positive that the criminal Nazi Golden Dawn is retreating even more in votes and percentages, remaining out of the Parliament. Naturally, we should not underestimate the fact that the forces that promoted it are now 'withdrawing” it, maintaining this Nazi entity as a reserve, as well as the fact that a percentage of their vote is being moved to other bourgeois parties and to related ideological political spaces, as with “Greek Solution” Party.

The strengthening of the KKE is the basic condition to repel and completely isolate such forces because it is the only force that struggles against the system that creates and utilizes them. The KKE steadily and consistently struggled against such forces, did not show tolerance, did not play games, did not 'fish in the blurry waters' of nationalism, as the other parties did.

7.The votes for the KKE will be cast from today in every workplace, in every neighborhood, in the schools, the universities; they will become a force to block new measures, for the organization of struggles and generally, popular resistance that will target the real enemy, for the relief of the working people, the unemployed, popular households, pensioners, the youth, all those who create the social wealth, but also suffer due to their needs not being satisfied.

We know that the difficulties are not over. The myth of the “post-memorandum” era and “fair and sustainable growth for all” or “growth with prosperity” do not concern the daily life of the people. The next day there will be, first of all capitalist competition and exploitation from which the European Union long-term Memorandum stem, the European Union anti-people commitments that lead to greater bankruptcy for the people. This is the strategy that SYRIZA and ND have, together with PASOK/KINAL and MERA25.

The new conditions demand the organization of a broad ideological-political counter-attack in order to show that there is another road, the road of overthrowing the exploitative system.

The new government is already ready to respond to the demands of capital for new drastic measures supporting its profitability. It will therefore follow the same policy along these main axes: both concerning domestic as well as external issues, but also active participation in the imperialist designs in the region with the dangerous commitments towards NATO and the USA, with new anti-people measures based on the preconditions that have already been agreed upon with the EU.

The KKE with all its power, inside and outside of the parliament, will struggle against all of this from the standpoint of workers' popular needs and the new government ND and the new delusions that SYRIZA and the other parties of capital will sow; it will lead the way in the organization of struggles of the working class, the popular strata, the middle strata, against the united attack of capital, the EU, NATO. It will organize the popular resistance in order to open the road for genuine overthrow, with the working class, the people in power.

The response and the participation of the popular strata to this invitation of the KKE constitutes the best and most essential vote of confidence in their power and towards their benefit.
