China has added more than 100 tonnes of gold to its reserves in the last ten months, underlining its position as one of the leading central bank buyers of the precious metal.

The People’s Bank of China said that its holdings of gold rose to 62.64m ounces in September, an increase of 190,000 ounces from August.

The increase of nearly 5.4 tonnes of gold to China’s holdings comes at a time when central banks across the world have been buying gold to diversify their reserve assets away from the US dollar as global trade tensions continue to simmer. Gold is considered a haven asset and a store of value in times of uncertainty.

A total of 14 central banks, primarily from emerging markets, have bolstered their gold reserves so far in 2019, according to data from the World Gold Council.

Suki Cooper, precious metals analyst at Standard Chartered Bank, said that China was most likely attempting to diversify its reserves away from foreign exchange and the dollar, as well as mitigate risk as geopolitical tensions build.

“China hasn’t said what its gold policy is but it would need to buy two years worth of global production to achieve diversification,” she said. “It looks like it is on track to add 150 tonnes for the whole year. The desire to add gold is there.”

China’s central bank has continued to stock up on bullion as the trade war with the US shows little sign of easing and the domestic economy is showing signs of slowing down. Negotiators from the US and China are set to meet at the end of the week but neither side is showing clear signs of backing down.

The gold price has risen by about 17 per cent this year to trade at just under $1,500 a troy ounce on Monday, putting the metal on course to achieve its best year since 2010.

China reaffirms commitment to state-led economy despite US pressure, after top Beijing policy meeting
Beijing reaffirms ‘public ownership’ is fundamental to China’s economic system in statements following fourth plenum this week
Top economic official promises to provide level playing field to all, including international firms, despite concerns over uneasy marriage of the two

After China’s closed door policy meeting this week, Beijing’s top brass reaffirmed its commitment to the state-led economy, while simultaneously promising a level-playing field to international business.
The state economy will get “stronger, better and bigger”, a press conference in Beijing heard on Friday, while public ownership will remain the primary vehicle for economic growth.
China will also “unswervingly encourage, support and guide” the development of private businesses, and allow the market to play a “decisive” role in resource allocation, according to the official statement from the four day plenum session of the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee, held this week.
The statement conveyed the key conclusions from closed door discussions between 370 of China’s ruling elite over the past four days. It also reconfirmed some of the fundamental differences between the economic models of the United States and the European Union and increasingly statist model pursued under Chinese President Xi Jinping.
While Washington and Brussels complain about the unfair advantages enjoyed by Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs), Beijing insists that a powerful state sector is vital for China’s economy, but claims that it does not preclude economic fair play.

Han Wenxiu, executive deputy director the General Office of the Central Financial and Economic Affairs Commission, told the press conference that China’s SOEs are “normal market players” that “follow market rules and take part in competition on an equal basis with others”, after four decades of reforms.
In addition, China’s state firms now largely exist in industries “important to national security that are backbones of the national economy”, Han claimed, adding that SOEs have retreated from “generally competitive sectors”.
“SOEs do not have advantages by definition. They are market entities the same as others, not only in the domestic market but also overseas,” Han said.
Han’s comments reflect Beijing’s view that it is possible to achieve “competitive neutrality” among public and private businesses. But the Chinese government is struggling to convince international businesses that such an easy relationship can exist, when key sectors from telecoms to energy are dominated by state players which have clear advantages in obtaining low-cost funding and government licenses.

Li Jianwei, a professor at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, said the state economy has made “the government both a referee and an athlete on the ground”. “It is impossible for it to treat SOEs, private companies and foreign firms equally,” Li said.
However, Han said Beijing would continue to attempt to balance the two, by more law enforcement against monopolies and a punitive compensation mechanism for intellectual property violation. “The plenum has discussed the issue of creating a fair competition for businesses of different ownership,” he said.

Why Are Ukrainian Neo-Nazis Joining the Hong Kong Protests?© Sputnik Screenshot

22:47 02.12.2019

Prominent Ukrainian neo-Nazi figures have been spotted in the Hong Kong protests just weeks after hosting an “academy of street protest” in Kiev.

Leaders of far-right Ukrainian groups that rose to prominence in the 2014 coup d’etat they helped orchestrate, including the Azov Battalion and Right Sektor, have recently traveled to Hong Kong to participate in the anti-Beijing protests there. It’s unclear why the groups, sporting the apparel of a far-right hooligan group called “Honor” or “Gonor,” have gone to Hong Kong, but the fact that both the 2014 Ukrainian coup and the present protests in Hong Kong have enjoyed extensive support from the CIA-spawned National Endowment for Democracy may give a clue.

“Hong Kong welcomed us as relatives,” Serhii Filimonov wrote on Facebook Saturday, sharing a video of himself and other Ukrainian far-right figures in the semi-autonomous Chinese city. Filimonov once headed the Kiev branch of the Azov Civilian Corps, a support group for the ultra-nationalist Azov Battalion that’s thinly veiled as a civilian NGO.

“Fight for freedom stand with Hong Kong!!” said another post by Filimonov, showing them posing, masked, alongside Hong Kong protesters.
Figures in the video as well as photos posted the following day include Ihor Maliar, an Azov Battalion veteran who sports a “victory or Valhalla” tattoo across his neck, and Serhii Sternenko, who headed the Odessa section of Right Sektor when it torched the Trade Unions House on May 2, 2014, killing 42 people and injuring hundreds in the street violence before and after. Sternenko also helped found the “People's Lustration” fascist gang, which harassed, beat up and humiliated former officials of the Ukrainian government in the months following the 2014 Euromaidan coup.

Several of the men wear paraphernalia of the far-right “Honor” or “Gonor” so-called youth group founded by Filimonov in 2015, sporting a stylized version of the “trident,” a symbol with ancient meaning in Ukraine adopted by ultra-nationalists, as three daggers. Several also have neo-Nazi tattoos, such as swastikas.

The men also posed in front of the wrecked Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where an intense two-week showdown between police and protesters saw more than 1,000 students detained and thousands of weapons seized, including petrol bombs and explosives.

A Ukrainian Facebook page that came to the defense of the Gonor crew and their trip Monday afternoon seems to bridge the gap between the two movements. Calling itself the “Free Hong Kong Center,” the page posts about the supposed strong links between the Hong Kong and 2014 Ukraine protests, complete with the words “umbrella” and “dignity” on their banner, referencing what demonstrators in Hong Kong called their 2014 protests, seen as a precursor to the present unrest, and by far-right Ukrainians to the 2014 coup.

The Center came to the defense of Gonor on Monday, posting that they are “simple activists” now and “are not connected to any Azov movements any more.”
“They assured us they are really against nazism and another kind of alt-right ideology,” they posted, dismissing the neo-Nazi imagery as traditional Ukrainian symbols.

It’s not clear exactly what these “simple activists” were doing in Hong Kong. However, it’s worth noting the extensive groundwork laid for both the 2014 uprising in Ukraine and the 2019 protests in Hong Kong via the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

In the three years before the 2014 coup, the CIA-backed NED sunk $14 million into regime change efforts in Ukraine, and the NED has been cultivating anti-Beijing attitudes in Hong Kong since the mid-1990s, before the territory was returned to Chinese rule by the British Empire.
Whether Filimonov and associates are there at the NED’s behest or as simply a bit of protest tourism is anybody’s guess.

Uyghur Genocide: The “Muslim Holocaust” in China?
December 13, 2019 orinocotribune
By Mona Issa – December 11, 2019

Beijing (AHT) – As the media turns to accuse China of an Uyghur genocide and Muslim holocaust in Xinjiang province, research suggests otherwise. For countries like Australia, the US, and France to come forward and defend Muslims whilst having a notorious history killing them abroad, it only serves logic that the legitimacy of their accusations plummets.

What’s happening in China? Is there really an Uyghur Genocide or Muslim Holocaust?

The Chinese Communist Revolution of 1949 resulted in the integration of Xinjiang province with the mainland. Xinjiang – or the Uyghur Autonomous Province – is the most ethnically diverse province in China, populated by 23 million, which is a drop in the ocean compared to China’s crushing population of 1.43 billion.

Although China deems the Uyghur Muslims no more native than the Hans, who are a majority ethnicity (92%) in China, the Uyghur’s ambition to form an independent ‘East Turkestan’ is not only rejected by China but also neighboring Muslim states.

Washington and NATO have expressed strong condemnation of the way China has treated Uyghur Muslims. Of the most prominent organizations which have been rigorously vocal since its establishment in 1996 is the World Uyghur Congress (WUC).

The WUC is funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), which is a soft power tool for U.S. foreign policy. While the WUC accuses China of “cultural and religious repression” of Uyghurs, the Turkic-speaking minority have executed thousands of terror attacks in the last 30 years alone. From shanking, to bus bombings, to suicide bombings, to vehicle-ramming, to plane hijacking, as well as killing Muslim religious figures.

But, let’s not generalize.

We cannot repeat the same mistakes of the past and stereotype an entire community of some 10 million Uyghur Muslims into terrorism. However, what could be said are two things – one, there is a fertile ground in Xinjiang for extremism and terrorist activity, and two – those engaging in extremism and terrorist activity have a name: The Turkistan ‘Islamic’ Party (TIP).

An offshoot of Al Qaeda, the ‘Turkistan’ Islamic Party is a Xinxiang-based terrorist group founded by Uyghur Muslims within the region. Furthermore, the TIP is closely affiliated with the World Uyghur Congress.

Reports in 2019 disclose that the United States has been funding militants while performing acts of generosity: $960,000 in donations to the WUC.

The TIP is run by Uyghur natives, who take advantage of the vast remote geography to run training camps. Abdul-Haq Al-Turkestani, the former leader of TIP killed by a drone strike, ran training camps in both pre-invasion Afghanistan and Taliban-stronghold areas in Pakistan.

Abdul-Haq has not only declared TIP responsible for the twin bomb blasts in 2009 in the city of Kashgar, but he has also threatened to kidnap staff members by sending a letter to the embassy of China to Pakistan. Al Haq, a member of Al-Qaeda’s Shura Majlis, was responsible for recruitment, propaganda, devising and implementing terror attacks.

Abdul_Haq_al-Turkistani_bf137

Is it only enmity with the Hans?
Although Al-Haq has called on Muslims to charge into an attack against the Chinese people for “massacres against Muslims,” multiple videos and reports have shown that Uyghur terrorists are indiscriminate of their aggressive assaults.

Hushur, an imprisoned contributor to the Tian’anmen Square attack, told authorities “We had to do it where people were concentrated. We would warn none beforehand. It didn’t matter whether you were a Muslim or an Uyghur, there was no distinction.”

In another instance, an Uyghur terrorist detonates a bomb in a market place, severely injures his own uncle, and is then slashed by his own nephew on the scene.

How has China dealt with it?
When it comes to their judiciary compass, China points out “three evils:” terrorism, separatism, and extremism – all of which are of serious concern to its social stability and national security, all of which punished severely.

On a regional level, Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), founded by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, functions to ensure mutual security and social stability.

Members of SCO are obliged to hand over individuals accused of terrorism to China. In parallel, the United Nations has repeatedly granted caught suspects “refugee status,” and US-funded human rights organizations such as Freedom House and Amnesty International expressed concerns over human rights violations against the terrorists upon returning to their homeland.

Through UN jurisdiction, the Uyghur terrorists are granted protection by international law until further notice. However, this does not block SCO advancements.

For example, after the July bomb blasts in Kashgar which resulted in 18 deaths, investigations revealed that the terrorists who were involved in the act were trained in Pakistan. With this knowledge, Beijing sent out an official request to Islamabad to attain military presence in tribal areas of Pakistan and shut down the camps.

On a local level, China since the 1949 revolution has been known to limit the religious practice but not forbid it, unlike what the World Uyghur Congress claims.

The Xinjiang province alone enjoys some 25,000 mosques, some of which are being demolished for spreading religious extremism. Because the Uyghur Autonomous Province has been a hot zone for deadly conflict, massive internment camps were designed and launched in 2017, which host over one million Uyghur Muslims and other minorities.

The camps, engineered by a Communist Party official Zhu Hailun, are not the “Muslim Holocaust,” but more like a detention center where individuals are selected according to national databases and artificial intelligence probing for connections to violent separatist activity. Such individuals are forced to undergo ideological change and deradicalization in order to be integrated into Chinese society.

In a leaked document by the Chinese government, through the China Cables, tactics and procedures are intricately articulated. The document shows how to ensure the safety of inmates in case of fires, diseases, and disasters, as well as the privacy of the program.

Furthermore, the program has been described as “vocational skills education,” where inmates learn Mandarin, emotional regulation, manners, civility, hygiene, and anti-extremist ideology. The inmates, or “students,” are evaluated by the teachers based on a customized point system, and are granted assistance for employment after at least one year of release.

Counter-terrorism camp should be called what it is, and not a Muslim concentration camp which indiscriminately drags Uyghur Muslims from their homes into torture and assault after 70 years of the revolution. However, the high secrecy and restricted media coverage policy of the camps could potentially leave room for setbacks and discrepancies.

Uyghur genocide claims: How did the US respond?
While the US and other NATO members have signed a letter condemning China’s initiative to counter-terrorism, the majority of UN members have signed a letter of support for the initiative, reinstating China’s legitimacy in the international community.

Furthermore, it is fair to say that for countries like Australia, the US, and France to come forward and defending Muslims against a Uyghur genocide whilst having a notorious history killing them abroad, it only serves logic that the legitimacy of their accusations plummets. However, upon finding any evidence of assault and violations, perhaps Muslim countries who’ve had open solidarity stances towards Yemen, Palestine, Bahrain, and Iraq would have better credibility.

Nonetheless, China declares that upon the implementation of the camps in 2017, there hasn’t been a terrorist attack in Xinjiang since.

Not bad though '1 million' seems like a big number, but China is a very populous country. And I got a few doubts about the 'reliability' of this outlet tho it's served pretty well so far. Several other relatively new outlets(at least to me) that have been useful have turned out to be Trot, I guess 'Permanent Revolution' was a dead giveaway, huh? Why are pissants so prominent in the 'prints'? Follow the money......

BEIJING -- As China celebrates the centenary of the May Fourth Movement, a recent survey conducted by the China Youth Daily found that 87.6 percent of young Chinese identify with Marxism.

A total of 10,393 young Chinese from 31 provincial regions in China have participated in the survey conducted from April 19 to 29, among whom 67.4 percent were born in or after 1990.

Of all the respondents, 89.3 percent of those born in or after 2000 identify with Marxism, the highest percentage of all age groups, the newspaper reported Friday.

This is followed by those born between 1980 and 1990 and those born between 1990 and 2000, of whom 88 percent and 87.8 percent identify with Marxism respectively.

About 54 percent of the respondents said that they have paid close attention to news reports about the centennial celebration of the May Fourth Movement.

The May Fourth Movement in 1919 is widely considered a great patriotic and revolutionary campaign pioneered by advanced young intellectuals and joined by people from all walks of life to resolutely fight imperialism and feudalism.

China’s Virus Response has been ‘Breathtaking’

February 3, 2020 Pepe Escobar amazing response, China, coronavirus, ebola, genome, Russia, socialism, tsar, WHO, Xi Jinping
Chinese President Xi Jinping is leading a scientific ‘People’s War’ against the coronavirus

By Pepe Escobar – January 29, 2020

President Xi Jinping formally told WHO head Tedros Ghebreyesus, at their meeting in Beijing earlier this week, that the coronavirus epidemic “is a devil and we cannot allow the devil to hide.”

Ghebreyesus for his part could not but praise Beijing for its extremely swift, coordinated response strategy – which includes fast identification of the genome sequence. Chinese scientists have already handed over to Russian counterparts the virus genome, with snap tests able to identify it in a human body within two hours. A Russia-China vaccine is under development.

The devil, of course, is always in the details. In a matter of a few days, at the peak of the most congested travel period of the year, China did manage to quarantine an urban environment of over 56 million people, including megalopolis Wuhan and three nearby cities. This is an absolute first in terms of public health, anytime in history.

Wuhan, with a GDP growth of 8.5% a year, is a significant business center for China. It lies at the strategic crossroads of the Yangtze and Han rivers and at a railway crossroads as well – between the north-south axis linking Guangzhou to Beijing and the east-west axis linking Shanghai to Chengdu.

As premier Li Keqiang was sent to Wuhan, President Xi visited the strategic southern province of Yunnan, where he extolled the immense government apparatus to boost control and sanitary prevention mechanisms to limit propagation of the virus.

Coronavirus catches China at an extremely sensitive juncture – after the (failed) Hybrid War tactics displayed in Hong Kong; an American pro-Taiwan offensive; the trade war far from solved by a mere “phase 1” deal while more sanctions are being plotted against Huawei; and even the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, which ultimately is about targeting the expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Southwest Asia (Iran-Iraq-Syria).

The Big Picture spells out Total Information War and non-stop weaponization of the China “threat” – now even metastasized, with racist overtones, as a bio-threat. So how vulnerable is China?

A people’s war
For almost five years now a maximum-security biolab has been operating in Wuhan dedicated to the study of highly pathogenic micro-organisms – set up in partnership with France after the SARS epidemic. In 2017, Nature magazine was warning about the risks of dispersion of pathogenic agents out of this lab. Yet there’s no evidence this might have happened.

In crisis management terms, President Xi has lived up to the occasion – ensuring that China fights coronavirus with nearly total transparency (after all, the internet wall remains in place). Beijing has warned the whole government apparatus in no uncertain terms not to attempt any cover-ups. A real-time webpage, in English, here, is available to everyone. Whoever is not doing enough will face serious consequences. One can imagine what awaits the party chief in Hubei, Jiang Chaoliang.

A post that went viral all over the mainland this past Sunday states, “We in Wuhan have truly entered the stage of people’s war against the new viral pneumonia”; and many people, “mainly Communist Party members” have been confirmed as “volunteers and observers according to street units.”

Crucially, the government directed everyone to install a “Wuhan Neighbors” applet downloaded from WeChat. That determines “our home’s quarantine address through satellite positioning, and then lock on our affiliated community organization and volunteers. Thenceforth, our social activities and information announcements would be connected to the system.”

Theoretically, this means that “anyone who develops a fever will report their condition through the network as soon as possible. The system will immediately provide an online diagnosis, and locate and register your quarantine address. If you need to see a doctor, your community will arrange a car to send you to the hospital through volunteers. At the same time, the system will track your progress: hospitalization, treatment at home, discharge, death, etc.”

So here we have millions of Chinese citizens totally mobilized in what’s routinely described as a “people’s war” using “high technology to fight against illness.” Millions are also drawing their own conclusions when comparing it with the use of app software to fight against the police in Hong Kong.

The biogenetic puzzle
Apart from crisis management, the speed of the Chinese scientific response has been breathtaking – and obviously not fully appreciated in an environment of Total Information War. Compare the Chinese performance with the American CDC, arguably the top infectious disease research agency in the world, with an $11 billion annual budget and 11,000 employees.

During the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in 2014 – considered a maximum urgency, and facing a virus with a 90% fatality rate – the CDC took no less than two months from getting the first patient sample to identifying the complete genomic sequence. The Chinese did it in a few days.

During the swine flu in the US in 2009 – 55 million infected Americans, 11,000 killed – the CDC took over a month and a half to come up with identification kits.

The Chinese took only one week from the first patient sample to complete, vital identification and sequencing of coronavirus. Right away, they went for publication and deposit in the genomics library for immediate access by the whole planet. Based on this sequence, Chinese biotech companies produced validated essays within a week – also a first.

And we’re not even talking about the now notorious building of a brand new state of the art hospital in Wuhan in record time just to treat victims of coronavirus. No victims will pay for their treatment. Additionally, Healthy China 2030, the reform of the health/development system, will be boosted.

Coronavirus opens a true Pandora’s box on biogenetics. Serious questions remain about experiences in vivo in which the consent of “patients” will not be required – considering the collective psychosis initially developed by Western corporate media and even the WHO around coronavirus. Coronavirus could well become a pretext for genetic experiments via vaccines.

Meanwhile, it’s always enlightening to remember Great Helmsman Mao Zedong. For Mao, the top two political variables were “independence” and “development.” That implies full sovereignty. As Xi seems determined to prove a sovereign civilization-state is able to win a scientific “people’s war,” that does not exactly spell out “vulnerability.”

Reflections on Hong Kong

Image

Western propaganda has a foothold on audiences around the world. Without basic fact-checking or even the pretence of unbiased rhetoric, mainstream media pounces on enemies of capital with ludicrous accusations. After Iraq and Venezuela, Western media now has its sights on China to continue its imperialist agenda with all its ‘credibility’ still intact. It also just so happens that Hong Kong is rallying, with the United States' fingerprints all over the unrest.

The mainstream media approach to the protests in Hong Kong is nonsensical and war-hawkish, and they are waiting and goading on another ‘Tiananmen’-like massacre while the Chinese government has done everything they can to preserve peace and respect the Special Administrative Regional Status. Those with white-saviour complexes nevertheless promote the same false narratives, and Hong Kong protesters are using this to their advantage – waving signs in English, American flags, and even singing the US national anthem as they make their way to US consulate.

If you want to witness the epitome of mainstream media failure, just see the shallowness of their coverage of the Hong Kong protests. But it’s the same with Venezuela only, this time, they have a stronger agenda and target: China. Even among the left, China is a controversial government but – because of this weakness – they are able to pounce on it all the more easily. And while it may not be another ‘brown’ country the US can invade, it still bears the same hallmarks of racism, bigotry, and shallowness the imperialist media utilises in its quest for regime change.

China's current and historical ‘authoritarian’ rule has been misrepresented for the benefit of Western propaganda, from the Chinese revolution, to the Cultural revolution, all the way down to Tiananmen Square, and Westerners in the left continue to gobble up Western propaganda that goes against the country. But let's say there are leftist, Marxist, or even communist groups in Hong Kong that are advocating for independence; let's say they have strong theories, praxis, and reasons as to why independence will be great for the masses. In this hypothetical situation, let’s go far as to say that they were 100% independent and not using any western funding or backing, they are still a minority. But 37,000 NGOs in Hong Kong receive money from the corrupt NED organization, US State Department, and CIA, and numerous Hong Kong leaders and organizers have met with US officials including Ted Cruz – all drowning out any chance of promoting a working class agenda. Does any leftist sincerely think that an independent Hong Kong would allow any sort of socialism or Marxism in their country?

We can no longer ignore the semantics around China. They are an economic threat to the hegemony of the West, and these tensions are manufactured. We can argue about the correct measures to help our comrades, while understanding the measures to protect the Chinese Communist Party, revolution, and their people. But to fall for the West's propaganda and allow its Orientalist narrative to take root in our perspectives against China is unacceptable. They are our comrades. They are closer to our ideals than any capitalist country in the West. Without the proper diligence, we may be aligning ourselves with the true oppressors (whether it’s the US or the CIA), rather than those fighting against them with established socialist countries that have overthrown capitalism and feudalism.

Demands for Hong Kong’s independence from China become increasingly absurd. Hong Kong heavily relies on China for its own financial stability, despite its gigantic economic inequality; 55% of Hong Kong’s trade and 80% of its tourists are from mainland China. Hong Kong’s GDP growth slowed down but by 2017 it was back on track, only to be hit by the trade war with the Anglo countries – which is a bigger obstacle than the local unrest.

If Hong Kong protesters were not waving imperialist flags, or even refusing and rebuking the aid of the West for its independence, this conversation will be vastly different. If this was not the case, communists could really analyse how China might deal with this problem internally. But the fingerprints of the CIA and US state department (along with British and other Western counterparts) are all over this, at the most convenient time at the height of a trade war. Proof of this includes:

• Protesters have previously been paid with European Research Council university funds

• Hong Kong organizers/leaders meeting with Julie Eadeh, who is the political unit chief of USCG U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong & Macau

• The NED has been funneling hundreds of thousands of US dollars to HK opposition groups, by their own admission

• The purpose of which was revealed by Michael Pillsbury, Consultant at US Department of Defense

• American Government NGOs fueling Hong Kong Protests

• Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor 香港人权监察 and Hong Kong CTU 香港职工联盟, along with 68 other Hong Kong ‘democratic right’ organizations earn hundreds of thousands every year from State Department funded NGOs

The Hong Kong protesters are being used as a pawn for America's political gain against China, and to be used like this is to do the imperialist bidding as the US seeks to drastically influence and reshape the region through any means necessary. If China did allow Hong Kong to become independent, the US would heavily bolster its development for influence to the point where the bourgeoisie of Taiwan, Macau, Tibet, and Xiongnu would want to separate, leading to the Balkanisation of China.

When protesters storm the Legislative Council of Hong Kong with British colonial flags and wear ‘Make Hong Kong Great Again’ caps, it is essential to question Hong Kong’s position under British rule. British imperialism was invariably worse than their current system, and even a quick glance at laws in Hong Kong under British rule rebuts this statement.

Laws were passed to ensure that no Chinese people would live in the most desirable areas in Hong Kong, which the British wished to preserve as their exclusive enclaves.

In a land in which ninety-eight percent of the population was Chinese, English was the official language. The Chinese language was not permitted to be used in government offices. Laws regulating conduct were written exclusively in English, a language which the vast majority of the population could not understand.

The British unleashed a horrid opioid epidemic on the Chinese through Hong Kong. Michael Parenti stated that, ‘when the communist liberated Shanghai from the sponsored Kuomintang reactionary government, in 1949, about 20% of the population of Shanghai, 1.2 million people, were drug addicts.’

‘The slave trade was merciful compared with the opium trade. We did not destroy the body of the Africans, for it was our immediate interest to keep them alive; we did not debase their natures, corrupt their minds, nor destroy their souls. But the opium sellers lays the body after he has corrupted, degraded and annihilated the moral being of unhappy sinners.’

The more distressing part about this was that the Chinese government seized some of the opium and destroyed it but, after the opium wars, they were forced to compensate the very people that were poisoning their country.

‘The highest-level British official in China in the late 1840s described Hong Kong as the ‘great receptacle of thieves and pirates protected by the technicalities of British law.’

‘Hong Kong has been Chinese Territory since ancient times. This is a fact known to all, old and young in the world... British imperialism came to china by pirate ships, provoked the criminal “opium war”, massacred numerous Chinese people, and occupied the Chinese territory of Hong Kong… It is the British imperialist who have come from thousands of miles away to seize our land by force and kill our compatriots.’

Sex slavery was a booming market, as girls were bought and sold by wealthy Chinese and British men. British rule legalized the sale of human beings and slavery, despite it being illegal in England.

Chinese residents were given curfews, and criminal punishments would range from legal physical beatings to bodily mutilation (compared to British rule breakers who would just pay a fine).

These are only half of the atrocities listed in Richard Daniel Klein’s ‘Law and Racism in an Asian Setting: An Analysis of the British Rule in Hong Kong.’

Hong Kong has one of the highest income inequalities in the world, along with a horrid housing crisis, with people sleeping in cages. On August 6, 2019, The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions; the largest union in Hong Kong with over 410,000 workers and a pro-Beijing orientation, makes a statement vehemently opposing the one-day strike launched by the anti-Beijing Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions.

According to a survey conducted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in July 2016, only 17.4% of overall respondents supported independence. This suggests over 80% of the population support either the current ‘one country two systems’ policy, or direct governance by China. Additionally, there is extreme doubt as to whether these crowds are as large as they seem, with media drastically giving wrong calculations and numbers, while Pro-Beijing Rallies in Hong Kong have gone completely unreported.

The ‘blind equality’ that some leftists nevertheless give to all police without comprehending the systems, cultures, economics, and back stories of such institutions demonstrates a failure to understand the necessary function of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat. Police in China are not the same as police in the US, which are deeply rooted in racism, slavery, and mass murder for the sake of private property. While we do not support brutal repression, we do point to the hypocrisy as leftists fail to acknowledge the far more extreme measures taken by police in their own countries – all while protesters attack anyone speaking Mandarin, the stabbing of a police officer in the neck and setting them alight with Molotov cocktails – and the bloodbath that would quickly ensue if these tactics were exported to the US. And so China does not even come close to the repressive measures taken in ostensibly democratic countries, even as Michael Parenti explained why every leftist must comprehend ‘authoritarian measures’ taken by socialist governments. But as Mao Tse Tung said: ‘Communists firmly stand for peace and are against war, but if the imperialists insist on war, we shall not be afraid of it.’

So, Chinese comrades, we support you.
"There is great chaos under heaven; the situation is excellent."
