Elizabeth Catlett: Revolutionary Artist

I was doing research on the Taller de Grafica Popular for the class I teach on illustration and came across the work of Elizabeth Catlett, a black American who in 1946 moved permanently to Mexico and to this day works from there. Her career is amazing and her work is prolific; she works in sculpture, painting, and linoleum cut. I was particularly taken by her printmaking, which reflects the lives and work of various historical groups such as sharecroppers, as well as tackling issues such as racism, equality of education, and women's rights. Hugely inspiring and a wonderful historical look at Mexico that many might not be familiar with.

Thanks for this blog Daniel. I had to google her after viewing the Sharecropper. Here is an excellent article about her 95th birthday (along with a little history of her life): http://www.theroot.com/views/happy-9...zabeth-catlett

You're very welcome, thanks for the feedback. She is so inspiring; especially because I work in linoleum and woodblock as well and she is, well, such a master of the technique. Thanks for the link--I love that she is still kicking at 95!
